DEDICATED TO A FRIEND Friend — a word of many defini- tions, one of which includes being there when needed, or being there when we merely wanted to talk. Our dedicatee fits the word friend in more ways than one dictionary definition. She is gentle, yet firm; sympathetic and understanding, yet not com- promising nor condescending. She seems to know the right time for cudgeling or cuddling. Mrs. Joyce Conkling, as one of the teachers' aides, was always willing to assist everyone — whether it was a program to type or a test to run off at five minutes to deadline. She even doubled as Advisor to the Annual when necessity required an immediate replacement. Currently Mrs. Conkling serves as secretary in the administrative office, and continues to serve the students, staff and school in selfless dedication. Mrs. Conkling has been with Uma- tilla High School for seven years. She hails from New York State where she tried her hand at many things from assembly work in an electronics plant to driving an over- the-road tractor trailer. Our dedication of this issue to Mrs. Conkling is our way to express a ‘‘thank you to a devoted employee, a staunch supporter of our school, and a friend to all. Mrs. Conkling, we love you. 10 OPENING
