V We of Umatilla High School realize that our school and the opportunity for us to pursue a course in learning is dependent upon, and is the result of the efforts of oth- ers who preceded us; and who still take an active inter- est in education. Every once in a while there comes - along one individual who contributes far more of his time and effort to forwarding our education than that t normally expended. Each generation seems to produce _ one such dedicated individual at the time when this ■ attribute is needed most. Umatilla and other Lake County students are fortunate to have this champion for education for the past twenty-six years in the person of Mr. Paul W. Bryan. His dedication to a cause merits recognition and in our - small way we of Umatilla Schools wish to pay tribute to - Mr. Bryan. We wish to thank him for his many contrib- utions to education and to our school. Somehow we “always knew that if Paul Bryan was for it, it was good I for us. Now, as we go forward in the scholastic system or ven- ture out in the pursuits of life, Mr. Bryan’s determina- tion, his dedication to principle, and his accomplish- ments will continue to serve as an example to be emu- ■ lated. Thank you, Paul W. Bryan. Our dedicatee fits the word friend in more ways than one dictionary definition. She is gentle, yet firm; sympathetic and understanding, yet not com- promising nor condescending. She seems to know the right time for cudgeling or cuddling. Mrs. Joyce Conkling, as one of the teachers' aides, was always willing to assist everyone — whether it was a program to type or a test to run off at five minutes to deadline. She even doubled as Advisor to the Annual when necessity required an immediate replacement. Currently Mrs. Conkling serves as secretary in the administrative office, and continues to serve the students, staff and school in selfless dedication. Mrs. Conkling has been with Uma- tilla High School for seven years. She hails from New York State where she tried her hand at many things from assembly work in an electronics plant to driving an over- the-road tractor trailer. Our dedication of this issue to Mrs. Conkling is our way to express a ‘‘thank you to a devoted employee, a staunch supporter of our school, and a friend to all. Mrs. Conkling, we love you. 10 OPENING OPENING 11 GSttuna involved' getting UimUuedl lS oni iv 4- 12 OPENING OPENING 13 14 PEOPIE PEOPLE PEOPLE 15 The way we were . . . 16 SENIORS 1975: Senior Celebration! Behind strong running and passing they rolled up a total of 154 points. A strong defense allowed only an average of 10 points per game including two shutouts. The major- ity of losses were to top ranked and undefeated teams. We owe much appreciation to Coach McGonigal for these past years of dedication and inspiration. His spirit inspired a will to win. He leaves us with a winning record not only for this year but for the past teams he coached to all levels in conference competition. Coach Tom Comer takes over as head coach and we wish him the best of luck. TOP RIGHT: Umatilla struggles to regain the ball. MIDDLE LEFT: And there goes the Bull- dogs . BOTTOM: End sweep brings yardage for Umatilla. The '74 J.V. Bulldogs proved to be the top football team here at UHS this year as they compiled a near perfect record of six wins to one loss. The defense proved to be the factor as they allowed the oppo- nents only thirty points and a maxi- mum of twelve points per game. Included in this was a total of four shut-outs. While the defense was holding the opponents to a bare minimum the offense was piling up a season total of 1 28 points which included a 52 point game against Eustis. The only loss came at the end of the season against South Sumter. This fine showing should be a pre- view of what to expect in the com- ing year. Much appreciation should be given to the coaches for their dedication of time and effort. UO J.V. FOOTBALL Better Things Ahead for J.V. Basketball TOP LEFT: What a Stretch. MIDDLE: Left to Right: R. On August 25, 1 974, we lost a person very dear to all of us, Mrs. Esther Thacker. Mrs. Thacker came to Umatilla High School three years ago as a Curriculum Generalist. She enjoyed her work and it showed. Everything she did was with kindness, patience, and intelligent understanding. We will always remember Mrs. Thacker, not only for the true dedication she gave to her work but also the way she brought love and laughter into our hearts. MEMORIAL 191 t
