DEDICATION To our helpful and understanding teacher, counselor, and friend, who has rendered every service possible to uphold the spirit of our Uma- tilla High; to maintain harmony in attaining goals set up by the student body; to promote honesty and integrity in all walks of life; and to en- courage each individual to meet challenges, face them, and overcome them, thus being the stronger for having done so. To one of the most devoted and lovable teachers, we, the Annual Staff of 1960, proudly dedicate this edition of the Bulldog's Tale to our very own . . . Mr. James H. Hardin RUEBEN W. CRAIG Supervising Principal ELIZABETH RYNEARSON School Secretary PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Students, This annual represents a year of your education. Only a short time ago you returned for the first day of the 1959-60 school term. Now the term is drawing to a close. We should take a look at the past year and see how wisely it has been used. Some of you are to be commended on the wise use of your time. Others of you need to make resolutions to do a better job in the future. Never before has achievement in school meant so much. Never before have we had the scholastic competition that students must face today. The record you make here will determine the course of your future. It is my hope that all of you can remember this year as being one of your more pleasant and more rewarding years of school. To the departing Seniors I would like to say. We will miss you; you are an outstanding group. To the other students the goal should be to make the next year better than this year. It has been a pleasure for me to work with you this year. Seventh grade brought Ronnie, Glynda And Linda Lou, from up Altoona way; And of course, Carol Holt From New Jersey, to stay. Mrs. Hethcox looked over This terrible little group, And decided she should have Come down with the croup. There sitting all in a row Were Doodles, Mickey. Myrle, David, Herbie, Claudia, Patty, Jimmy, Tobie, Bang, Steve, J. L., Louise, Margaret Ann, and Walter; All r'aring to go. We made it to the second And were all ready to start, When Juliette came to join us. Man, she wasn’t too smart. In the third and fourth we added Not a single desk. Then Mrs. Kilker decided we were Sixteen little pests. It was here Jn the fifth Three more joined the crew. There were John Ed, Ernest, and Kathie Jo. All bright, shiny, and new. Now away to the sixth And halfway through school Joined Buddy, Melvin, Lomax, Jane, And Lloyd, a truck-driving fool I The eighth and ninth we were blessed; Three more pupils from every way. There were Leslie, Bunny, And quiet Mary Kay. The tenth brought Mickey Carter, A Kentucky-born lad. And that really made Coach Lewis glad I The eleventh grade now And Sue Phelps came our way. Along with her smile, To help brighten the day. And then the twelfth grade Here at long last. SENIOR PROPHECY Sitting in my hotel suite in Lexington, Kentucky, after receiving the international award for the finest line of race horses in the world, I, Tobie Wiygul, started to think of my old senior class, better known as The Class of Champions. Naturally Leslie Kenyon comes to mind first because of the fine Morgan Stables he now owns. He is known worldwide as the man that sits tall in the saddle. Then there is Margaret Ann Sewell, winner of the National Award for dressing a steer in the shortest length of time over 500 other contestants. Herbert Babb, who has helped us all so much with our news bul- letins, has given big coverage on his worldwide newscasts. His interviews with professional basketball players Mickey Carter and J. L. Kicklighter and pro football players Melvin and Bang Collins were wonderful; just the right touch of sentimentality about the good old days. In my reminiscing, I go back to that wonderful night a few years ago when so many of us gathered in the House of Garris, owned by Mary Kay Garris, to hear Jimmy Daugherty and Jane Coates sing the lead in the famous opera, Claudia, written and directed by the famous concert pianist, Claudia Cal- laway. There was Glynda Lee Bertine and Linda Lou Graham dressed in their finest creations from the House of Lee-Lou, located in Altoona. Everyone arrived in cars, but John Ed Smith on one of his tractors - the world's finest model, air-conditioned with power drive. Lomax Sasser and Steve Rigdon were there wearing their crowns. They had just received them for being the oeauugest Beatniks. juliette Wingfield came surrounded by security guards from her atomic plant as no chance could be taken with the safety of the world's leading atomic scientist. It was then that Buddy Turner arrived carrying his shortwave radio set, saying he couldn’t leave it at home. (He was expecting a message from China ). That night we all ate at Doodles, New York's leading restaurant, owned by Doodles Seabrook. He has a worldwide line of restaurants and has just bought out all the Howard Johnsons in the U. S. I heard for old time's sake that he used only Miller Trucks (owned by Lloyd Miller) to do his trucking. The floor show that night was directed by Myrle Bubbles Daniels, and featured Kathie Cutie Keel and Susie-woosie Phelps, who had just returned from a command performance in England. Well, I have reminisced long enough. Now back to reality. I am surrounded by some of my classmates. Take Mickey Holsworth, for instance. He keeps my stables in good repair with mate- rials from his hardware store. It covers 10 blocks and is 6 stories high. Most of his deliveries are made with Carol Ann Holt at the wheel of the truck. Incidentally, she has just won the award of the world's safest truck driver. Then there's Doctor Walter Heim. I have him working for me at a fab- ulous salary as he is the world's most famous vet. He, with the help of his laboratory technician, Patty Lee, has written several books on diseases of horses. Ronnie Clark, President of Georgia Tech, and two of his associ— professors, David Coleman and Ernest Leggett, have been drawing plans for a tip-proof horse trailer. I expect them to arrive any day now. Here comes Louise Roundtree, Mr. Clark's private secretary, bringing me the plans now. I really must get down to work once again and check them to make sure they are what I really want. This was Coach Madison's second year as head football coach at Umatilla where he led the Bulldogs to an identical record last year. After losing to Wildwood in the opening game of the season. Umatilla bounded back to nudge Clermont and then cruised past the New Smyrna Barricudas. Then a crippled Umatilla team plagued by a multitude of injuries was defeated by Mt. Dora, 27 to our 7. Recovered from early season injuries the Bulldogs then romped impressively past four straight opponents; St. Cloud, Eustis, South Sumter, and Groveland. To the disappointment of a huge homecoming crowd the Bulldogs fell to the Tavares Eleven. Umatilla closed out an overall suc- cessful season by defeating a scrapping Lake Weir team. Named to the All-Conference team were: Captain, Doodles Seabrook, Captain, Mickey Holsworth, Co-Captain, Melvin Collins, J. L. Kicklighter, and Ray Guenther. Dora 88 The 1959-60 Bulldogs, with hopes high for a successful season at the start of the year, dis- appointed their followers and themselves by turning in a rather dismal 5 won and 15 lost record. The loss of the departing Seniors will be felt, but the returning members of the squad have an opportunity, along with next year’s newcomers, to atone for this year's disappointments, and to reach the heights next year of which they dreamed this year. At times this 59-60 crew was brilliant and appeared on the verge of greatness, but unforseen forces tended always to crop up at the most inopportune moments. t MICKEY CARTER DAVID COLEMAN DOODLES SEABROOK ERNEST LEGGETT LESLIE KENYON JACK WILLIAMS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL FIRST ROW, Left to right: Myrle Daniels, Patsy Dykes, Mary Gerding, Kathy Keel.
