Class History The year is September 1, 1947. V.'e are at the Umatilla Grammar School. All things are as they always have been except: Ann Garnto, Burma Pulliam. Gail St. John, Kathy Welch, Susie Turner, Lois Keith, Marylin Bryant, Ike Vaugiiv Leon Stricklen, Judy Kemp, Sonny Wood, Jimmy Henderson, Lamar Elton, and Hughes Powers are here. Vie made it through the first grade without too much difficulty—except those long, tiresome hours of standing on one Toot with our nose in a circle drawn on the blackboard. Arriving in the second grade, we found with us two new girls, Evie Hall from Defuniak Springs and Elaine Marteeny from Pennsylvania. There wasn't anything exciting happening this year except we put on our first great play— Little Red Riding Hood . The third and fourth grades passed without any additional strays coming to join this happy, prosperous class. Upon reaching the fifth grade, we found Marilyn Shockley coming to us from the famous backwoods of Paisley. Guess they do become dangerous after so many years I After a year of hard, struggling work we were in the sixth grade. Here Billy Jenkins from Virginia decided to join us. Finally the worn-out teachers of grammar school, being slightly?? tired of us, co-operated, and promoted us to the seventh grade—Junior High School!I Boy!! We sure thought we were big-shots---changing classes amidst all those Seniors and other upperclassmen—but, it soon became old. Despite the fact Coach Lowe almost drove us mad and gray before our time, we made it through the eighth grade in fairly good shape—with just one ques- tion left to ask— What kind of shape was he in? Ninth grade--HIGH SCHOOL AT LAST!! Ricky Mathers from Georgia came to add to our ranks, and all for the specific purpose of crashing the party on Rat Day. Those were the days! The only important thing remembered about our tenth year of school is the winning of first place for the most beautiful homecoming float. Of course, Mr. Stock probably has many fond (??) memories of us---April Fool's Day, odd noises—things like that. When we entered our Junior year, we found more hard work ahead of us, for that was the year to give the Seniors a prom and banquet. With the help of Miss Zellman and our parents, we made it—without a casulty. In fact, we even grew for a time, for Linda Wood came from Tallahassee to see how much help she could give us. V as it Smokey the Bear that said there was more in the scrub (Ocala National Forest) than the Governor's Mansion and the Capitol could ever offer? The Spaghetti Supper and Junior Play added more fun and excitement—and work. Even with all this, Cupid struck with his arrow and knocked four of our girls from the now famous clan. Now, at last, after twelve long, hard years of struggle, we are Seniors at last. This has been not only the last year, but the best. It began with the bake and rummage sales, went on through Mock Graduation, and ended with Graduation. This has a finality about it, for it ends twelve wonderful years of work and play, friendships, and all the other great things which happen during this period—but in reality it is only the beginning—the beginning of a new and better life, to which we have spent these years preparing. What happens In the future no one knows(what's the old song Whatever Will Be Will Be ?), but we are hoping it will be half as easy as these last twelve years have been.
