•7 ,-v. I I 1 DEDICATION Our football team, united they stand. Ready to meet ary team in the land; Ready to fight where e'er they may be. Our football team's to be proud of, you see. With Apopka and New Snyma we were outclassed. Although we fought hard we came in last; Though we were rough and gave them a fight. They were the ones who saw victory that night. Clermont's colors blazed white and green. But made them no match for our B string. Their top score was thirteen—ours twenty-sixI Poor ol' Clermont really took the licks. Oh, Mt. Dora Hurricanes were shoddy windbags1 When we beat them 12-6, we didn't brag. We beat them and bruised them quite a lot. Then we got the ball and took off like a shot. The St. Cloud team were Bulldogs, also. But we rolled them over nineteen to zero. They came with the thought, We 're to winl But t hey went home to think it over again. Eusti8 piled up a score that was very high. But they couldn't keep our Bulldogs at a tie. With 50 seconds left, down the field we tore. To slam over the winning Bulldog's score. 'Twas Bushnell who came for our Homecoming game When our Queen, Susie Turner, was proclaimed. The game was a tough one, we put up a fight, and In the last few minutes we scored just right. Groveland is one game we won't forget) We were penalized and penalized to our regret. Groveland was good, but was not up to our best; Our mighty Bulldogs put that team to the test. At their Homecoming Game, Tavares got smeared. Which was Just exactly what they had feared. They had lost eight games and won only one, 2ven our 3 string put that team on the run. Umatilla and Lake Weir clashed on their field With each team determined no quarter t o yield. Conference runner-ups were decided that night Umatilla came out first and that was all rightI Guli Buccaneers in the Lion's Bowl we played. Touchdowns by Lamar, Roy, and Doodles were made. We racked up a score, totalling twenty-five. But they made the same to close it a tie. Oh, boys, this season you have done so well. We're proud of you more than poetry can tell. You've fought and fought right down to the end And found there's more to football than to win tdmOUafoeitie Mr. Reuben Craig - Supervising Principal of Umatilla Schools Mr. Joe E. Present Seniors Pictures Class History The year is September 1, 1947. V.'e are at the Umatilla Grammar School. All things are as they always have been except: Ann Garnto, Burma Pulliam. Gail St. John, Kathy Welch, Susie Turner, Lois Keith, Marylin Bryant, Ike Vaugiiv Leon Stricklen, Judy Kemp, Sonny Wood, Jimmy Henderson, Lamar Elton, and Hughes Powers are here. Vie made it through the first grade without too much difficulty—except those long, tiresome hours of standing on one Toot with our nose in a circle drawn on the blackboard. Arriving in the second grade, we found with us two new girls, Evie Hall from Defuniak Springs and Elaine Marteeny from Pennsylvania. There wasn't anything exciting happening this year except we put on our first great play— Little Red Riding Hood . The third and fourth grades passed without any additional strays coming to join this happy, prosperous class. Upon reaching the fifth grade, we found Marilyn Shockley coming to us from the famous backwoods of Paisley. Guess they do become dangerous after so many years I After a year of hard, struggling work we were in the sixth grade. Here Billy Jenkins from Virginia decided to join us. Finally the worn-out teachers of grammar school, being slightly?? tired of us, co-operated, and promoted us to the seventh grade—Junior High School!I Boy!! We sure thought we were big-shots---changing classes amidst all those Seniors and other upperclassmen—but, it soon became old. Despite the fact Coach Lowe almost drove us mad and gray before our time, we made it through the eighth grade in fairly good shape—with just one ques- tion left to ask— What kind of shape was he in? Ninth grade--HIGH SCHOOL AT LAST!! Ricky Mathers from Georgia came to add to our ranks, and all for the specific purpose of crashing the party on Rat Day. Those were the days! The only important thing remembered about our tenth year of school is the winning of first place for the most beautiful homecoming float. Of course, Mr. Stock probably has many fond (??) memories of us---April Fool's Day, odd noises—things like that. When we entered our Junior year, we found more hard work ahead of us, for that was the year to give the Seniors a prom and banquet. With the help of Miss Zellman and our parents, we made it—without a casulty. In fact, we even grew for a time, for Linda Wood came from Tallahassee to see how much help she could give us. V as it Smokey the Bear that said there was more in the scrub (Ocala National Forest) than the Governor's Mansion and the Capitol could ever offer? The Spaghetti Supper and Junior Play added more fun and excitement—and work. Even with all this, Cupid struck with his arrow and knocked four of our girls from the now famous clan. Now, at last, after twelve long, hard years of struggle, we are Seniors at last. This has been not only the last year, but the best. It began with the bake and rummage sales, went on through Mock Graduation, and ended with Graduation. This has a finality about it, for it ends twelve wonderful years of work and play, friendships, and all the other great things which happen during this period—but in reality it is only the beginning—the beginning of a new and better life, to which we have spent these years preparing. What happens In the future no one knows(what's the old song Whatever Will Be Will Be ?), but we are hoping it will be half as easy as these last twelve years have been. Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1959, being or sound mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath our humble possessions to the Students of U. H. S. We, Marylin Bryant and Burma Pulliam, will to Patsy Dykes and. Patsy Lou Johnston our ability to go to the Dixie and visit from car to car for three hours a night with the exception of Monday. 1, Lamar Elton, will my ability to make a 6 - cylinder Ford run,to anyone who is stupid enough to buy one. I, Ann Garnto, will my electric chair in the Senior Class to Patty Lee. It's not too great a shock, Patty. I, Evie Hall, will my ability to sleep late to all the kids from Crows Bluffy who get up with the birds to catch the bus anyway J I, Jimmy Henderson will my ability to get around the state of Florida without a car to any dang fool who wants to try it. I, Billy Jenkins, will my goatee to Doodles Seabrook. Just leave the blade out of the razor, DoodlesJ I, Lois Keith, will my gift of gab to Linda Lambert. It just takes plenty of practice, Linda ! I, Judy Kemp, will my ability to get to the orange grove in three minutes, thirty seconds flat to any F.T.A. member who feels energetic enough to try it. I, Elaine Marteeny, will my Yankee accent and youse guys to Mary Kay Gerris. Use it at least once a day, Mary Kay, and watch those Southerners turn red 1 I, Rickey Mathers, will my ability to save money to Mike Hatfield. Spend it wisely, Mike. I, Hughes Powers, will my way with the cows to Dick Collins. Just don’t flash that red around too much. I, Gail St. John, will my ability to make four fouls a minute to Barbara Sue Johnston. A little jab now and then when the referees aren't looking (???) does the trick 1 I, Marilyn Shockley, will my small waistline to Sue Phelps. Lay off the whipped cream and never use a tape measure, Sue ! I, Leon Stricklen, will my ability to fly low without hitting any trees to anybody that's fool enough to try it. Just get a good airplane. I, Susie Turner, will my ability to be a private eye at Daytona Beach to Patsy Dykes and David McCall. I, Ike Vaughn, will my excessive weight to Tommy Merrill. Just eat those Wheaties , Tom. I, Linda Wood, will my best ability, which is lisping, to Barbara Sue John - ston. Just keep those western teeth apart, Barbara Sue, and you will be a scream. I, Sonny Wood, will my slot on the drag strip to Leslie Kenyon. I, Kathy Welch, will my red hair to Miss Zellman to use with her German temper. Just close your eyes, hold your breath, count 10—---and let 'er rip. Senior Class Prophecy As the smoke rises and clears and the last gunshot echoes across the plain, we see the ending of the Second War Between the States—won bv the South, by the way ] Looking up into the wild blue yonder, we see the flying ace of the Confederate Air Force, Leon Stricklen, zooming by on his new super-sonic jet with power steering. Leon always did have a way with the birds ! Quiet! ’What’s that we see hiding in those bushes? Why-------it’s Jimmy Henderson. As you know, slavery is once more in use since the South won the war, and it seems the slave hunters have mistaken Jim for Black Joe, the runaway. Poor Jimmy. How is he ever going to convince them he only has a little Jew in himself? Ike Vaughn is now a forest ranger in the Confederate National Forests. Ike always did have a green thumb, especially in cold weather. Poor Elaine Marteeny isn't with us any more. It seems she came out with one of those youse guys at the wrong time, and became a victim of a Con- federate linching mob. Rickey Mathers has blushed himself right into color T.V.-----ran N.B.C.'s peacock right off the air! Ann Garnto is still the chief road runner for Mrs. Rynearson's office squad back at ole U.H.S. Her running has been cut down, though. An automatic tea maker has been installed in the office now, and believe you me,this really cuts down the running ! Hughes Powers has become quite a prosperous man around these parts.Hughes is in the dairy business and has quite a lot of important pull—and pull is what it takes to make the dairy business do well! Linda Wood is now the star of stage, screen, and banana trees. She’s in the Tarzan movies now ran the monkies right out of business, swinging thru the trees. She’s had plenty of practice in those backwoods of Altoona. At the advice of Mr. R. W. Craig, Billy Jenkins has started his own col- lege. It's called Pittman Tech. The college has a fine recreational center known as Uncle Tom's. Sonny Wood is still sweating it out at Southern Tech (Georgia extension of Pittman Tech). Sonny just can't keep his figures straight, which seaas strange. Back at ole U.H.S. he used to do quite w£ll at remembering them, 38-22-38, etc. Gail St. John and Lois Keith have started a home for old maids. Don't guess they will ever catch themselves a man. Lamar Elton is still trying to make the team at F. S. U. The coach has promised him a position as head water boy next week—that is if he can carry a bucket better than he can a football. Kathy Welch is still going from college to college—seems every time she gets settled in one, it integrates and she has to transfer to another one. It's a good thing Kathy's almost through—she's about to run out of collegesJ Evie Hall is still trying to make it at ole Umatilla High. Mrs. Edward's flunked her because of tardiness. Someday she will learn that school starts at eight o'clock—not when she gets there. Ten o'clock scholar thev call her. Judy Kemp is now a well known author. Her latest novel. The Adventures at Pumpkin Pond, won the Ain't Nature Grand award. Those true-life exper- iences always are the best! Marylin Bryant and Burma Pulliam are in the false pony tail business. H y are really worn out by the end of the day—-chasing those ponies to get the tails is tough work. Marilyn Shockley is now known as Smokey the Bear. There certainly aren't any Indians sending up those smoke signals. Susie Turner has opened a school for future Ann Ferans. Her success is in using silky-straight and Ipana for that special effect. A team that won’t be beat, can’t be beatI This could well have been the motto of the 1958 Umatilla High School Football Team-ably coached by Coach Madison and Coach Lewis. In pre-seasos polls, Umatilla was slated to wind up in the cellar. As the season propressed, the fighting Bulldogs let it be known that the con- ference championship was what they wanted, and they were out to win it. With early season loses to Apopka and New Smyrna behind them, the Bull- dogs began their fight in the conference race. Clermont, Mt.Dora, Eustis and St.Cloud were taken one at a time and the big battle with Groveland was at hand. Groveland scored first half on defence. The Bulldoes tied it.up 6-6 and came back the secound half even more determined. Late in the third period.Umatilla’s effort paid off and the score showed them 13 to Groveland 6. Another Groveland score was to no avail as the Bulldogs still led 13-12 and it looked as if they about to win, not only the game but the conference championship as well. But fate had different ideas. A Groveland team outplayed allnight came to life. Throwing desperation passes, the Grovelands finally scored right as the game ended to win 19-13. Tavares and Lake Weir then fell, and the season ended with a successful seven wins and three losses with second place in the conference. This record resulted in an invitation to play New Port Ritchey in the Lions Bowl. The Game ended in a 25-25 tie. Umatilla can well be proud of the Bulldogs, who gave every minute,play- ed all they hadl ettuvi Billy Jen’-irs Co - Capt in All - Conference All Mid-State North-South All Star Game Outstanding Lineman Lamar Elton All-Conference Outstanding Back Leon Strickleni Captain ' Hughes Powers All - Conference vVvVMid-State, Second Team Basketball Team - 1st row (left to right) : Bobby Vaughn; Jackie 7 illiams Leslie Kenyon; David Coleman; Robert Skipper; Buddy McTureous; 2nd row Mickey Carter; Billy Jenkins; Ronnie Clark; Lamar Elton; Jimmy Henderson Doodles Seabrook; Pat Kicklighter; 3rd row: Coach Lewis; J.L. However, lack of experience under fire, a tough schedule against many seasoned teams, and an epidemic of colds and injuries prevented as successful season as had been hoped for. Refusing to give up, and playing with their usual Bulldog tena- city, the boys pulled out several victories, and at the season’s end, were showing much promise. The departing Seniors—Lamar Elton, Billy Jenkins, and co-captain Jimmy Henderson—will be sorely missed next year, but with the return of co-captain Doodles Seabrook, all conference guard Mickey Carter, and all the others, the prospects are bright for next year. Also on hand to help out will be the young Bullpups from this year’s B souad. The future looks bright indeed. Jimmy Henderson Doodles 3e abrook Co-Captain Co-Captain J.L. All of the Senior Girls that are leaving will be missed, but we know the substitutes will do a wonderful job of replacing them. The forwards leaving are Kathy Welch and Linda Wood: Gail St. John is the only guard to leave the ranks. With several veterous back from last year’s fine team, the Bulldogs fought hard right down to the last pitch of the last game and were in the thick of the battle for the Conference Crown, finally finishing in third place. Three hard-hitting seniors, Lamar Elton, Hughes Powers, Leon Stricklen led the attack most of the season ably supported by Doodles Seabrook,Leslie Kenyon, Jack Williams, J.T. Peacock, Ernest Leggett, J.L. Kicklighter, and Bobby Vaughn. The Seniors will be hard to replace next year but coming up from this year's reserves are soon most promising candidates.
