‘Dedicate The members of the Beta Club dedicate this the 19$i(.-$5 volume of the Bulldog's Tale to Miss Elsie Zellman, who came in the fall of 1914-8 to be a teacher in this school from which she was graduated. Since then she has been our social science teacher, coach of the girls basketball champion teams, sponsor of the Junior Class and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and a jolly good friend to us all. She has helped us in the past, and we hope she will be here many more years to help U.H.S. students along the road of education. We of the Beta Club are proud to dedicate this volume of our school annual to a teacher who has helped us all in so many ways. Worth it? - . 955 ‘rtyutforuf Starting off with a count of ten, we Seniora began the twelve grueling years. With Mrs. Hethcox leading Billy Goodson, Lamar Kenney, Halph Kicklignter, tiobert Lee, Gerald Lucas, Tommy Osborne, Jean Pulliam, Phyllis Straker, Anne Turner, Mary Wilson and Merrell Allison, who met us in the first grade, the potential and dignified Seniors of 1955 em- barked upon the twelve year voyage on the sea of knowledge. ntering the second grade from South Bay, Buddy Johnson arrived, only to leave us in the third grade, for the great city of Altoona. We caught up with Carl Perry Merrill in the third grade And had Charles Gambrell, Eva Dell Curry, A1 Stephens and Arlene Daniels join us from Tennessee, Georgia and Jacksonville. With no additions in the fourth year, but one subtraction, Charles Gambrell, our class, not ready but willing, entered the fiftn grade with the sweet little num- ber of sixteen. our new additions were Martha McCollough and Ken- neth Shockley from Paisley, who made us a nice even number of eighteen. Mozelle Ball, Jay Snaffer and that quiet, sVlr- ny, little girl, Ann Nelson, joined us in the sixth grade to run our score up to the ripe old number of twenty-one. introduction of class-changing met us at the seventh grade door. Prom our next-door neighboring city, Altoona, came Dalton Bryant, Robert Curry and those darling twins, Faye and Maye English. Buddy Johnson decided that Umatilla was the best place to settle down, so he came back. Then from the swampy and miry state of Mississippi, dashed young Romeo John Anderson to bewitch and enthrall all the dam- sels. Excitement was also stirred up by that good-looking- hunk-of-a-man, Lyle Graham from Eustis, who added his beam- ing face to our now odd score of twenty-seven. a the opening of Senior high school, we had an addition of three to join us in celebrating that memorable day of Freshman initiation; Linda Turner from Mardi Gras Orleans, Louisana; Ted Martin from Navy Norfolk, Virginia and Betty Jean Creamer from Cotton Alabamy. Our Sophomore year brought no new members, and we began that great year of '53 as Juniors with a perfect score of thirty. Charles Gambrell again joined us from Tennessee and helped us ring up many memories from the Junior Play, the Banquet, and the Prom. Rejoicing now that we are Seniors with a membersnip of thirty-one, we want to give you our farewell address. It has been wonderful being schoolmates witn all of you, and we wish you underclassmen as wonderful, as prosperous and as exciting Senior year as we nave had. So leaving you now, we bid you adieu. Senior Class Prophecy Sometime in the future a man settled down to read his favorite monthly magazine. He noticed that the feature was a story on the Umatilla High School class of 1955. Turning to the article, he began to read the stories of some of the students he once had known so well. Robert Lee, a graduate of Soutnern College and now an outstanding journalist had written this story of his Umatilla Class mates. Eva Dell Curry, his 120 word a minute secretary had assisted him in collecting tne data. Morrell Allison was given a whole pa ge in recognition of his outstand- ing work as scout master at Camp Lanoche. John Anderson, just home from the Navy, was at the same camp teaching the young scouts to swim. Dalton Bryant, richer than all the rest, cashed in on oil wells in Texas. Gives away pennies. Betty Jean Creamer and Mozelle Hall were busy rearing future Umatil- liaJSS Kenneth Shockley and Robert Curry were raising slash pine on their famous 14.0,000 acres. Faye English has taken Miss Zellman's place in U.H.S. as sciology teacher, while her twin, Maye has the athletic classes and coaches the girls' basketball. Carl Perry Merrill has enlarged the Merrill Sons Garage Business to spread all over south Umatilla. Euddy Johnson, having graduated from Georgia Tech Engineering school, was the chief engineer for the Florida Highway Department. Ralph Kicklighter and Linda Turner were the professional, coaches for tne Globe Trotters' Basketball Chanps. Jay Shaffer, owner and operator of tne Shaffer riall Garage was at the present suffering from a severe toothace. Tommy Osborne had won national recognition for his last ten bills passed by Congress. n Martha McCollougn and Mary Wilson gave lectures over T.V. on How to Ar- range the Furniture in the Ultra modern Home Gerald Lucas and A1 Stephens were working together on Florida Waterway aid Fish Laws. Gerald owned the camp and A1 was tne lawyer. . Charles was tne leading electrician in Lake County. He had graduated from the Georgia School of Technology . He had enlarged Herman Kicklight- er's service. Lamar Kenney was the principal of the celebrated private school for white children. Jean Pulliam and Anne Turner have the southeastern territory for their latest modes in ladies' wear. Billy Goodson was making a national hit with his baritone on T.V. net- works . Arlene was his accompanist and earned her living by running a private business school. Phyllis Straker was her head secretary, bookkeeper, filing clerk and water boy . Lyle Graham had Just flown in from Las Vegas where he owned a million dollar hoted. Ted Martin had become business manager for the Erennand Construction Co. in 1959, and was succeeding in the business. Ann Nelson was an elementary teacher in Altoona after having tried both the stage and matrimony. So ended the story of the Class of 1955. All were happy and success- ful and well on their way to fame and prosperity. tutor Gf duatton 'C§l Johnny Pres.; Club-3 ball-3. Charles Pres.; ball-2; Play.
