What happened I cannot explain, but I do know that it was as though I were sitting in front of a huge television screen watching my present classmates in some future time. The first one to appear in clear, color television was LUCIE RAY AUSTIN, smartly dressed and seated in a new model plastic roadster. The handsome man (evidently her hus- band) who was driving, stppped for a red light and I saw them wave to two Red Cross nurses crossing in front of them. They were JACKET HOULBERG and BETTY JEAN JOHNSON out on some mission of mercy. The scene shifted to the comer of 42nd and Broadway where children stood throwing pennies to a man and his dancing monkey. Just as I realized that the or an-grinder was CHARLES HOAGLAND up came a sprightly looking young man with an attractive lady on each arm. These greeted Chailes familiarly and I heard him congratulate them—SANDRA COLEMAN and BARBARA SUTTON—on the blg hit” their songs wore making in Radio Cith Music Hall. Their only severe critique was a JUDYTH KYMBALLE. Could she be little old ”judy” from way down South in Umatilla? At this point the screen blurr d and I saw nothing till a dome came out of the static and I recognized the capitol at Washington—then the House, and scattered members listening to the Speaker who was waving his gavel at two representatives from Florida. These I recognized as THURMAN ANDR'WS and his opponent, MIKE BOWERS. The Speaker s face came into fpcus. Why, whoever thought Ralph Cadwell would become a Speaker in Congress. Next In a room in the White House I gazed at a bright red-headed lady—MARIE BATES, upon my word,—who stood welcoming guests at a reception. From the conversation she carried on with FLOYD McCOLLOUGH, chairman of the National Poolroom Investigating commit- tee, and JERRY CLARK, engineer in charge of the reconstruction of Russian air bases, I learned that her Vice-President husband had recently succeeded to the Presidency. ANITA HOLLIMGER stood near-by admiring the famous painting, Lona Misa, signed by our artist classmate, MARION GRIFFIN. Marie's secretary is FRANCES JONES who won the championship speed title with a rate of thirteen words a minute. At this point a prosperous-looking gentleman advanced and shook hands. He is WILLIAM A. KICKLIGHTER here to promote the sale of his thick, lucious, sizzling-hot New Zealand steakes in Washington's dining halls. Suddenly everyone turned quickly and looked out the wide doors. I saw a whole troup of school children advancing In the direction of the receiving line. They were milling around two older persons-one short and one tall-who were urging them to mind their manners At first I recognized neither of them because of the heavy hom-rimmed glasses, wrinkles, and gray hairs. But when I heard them scream and rush at the First Lady of the land, I knew it could be no other than WILMA SHULTZ and BETTY ANN SKINNER. I was surprised to learn that these two had dedicated their declining energy to the art of teaching, and were now touring the world with their Seniors. I heard the names of Don Kimball and Pat Kick- lighter as Introductions were made. Another change. The face of that pilot in the Jet propulsion plane which streaked across the screen must have been BILLY MERRILL somewhere in the wild blue yonder”. I think the puff of -as” in the stratopshere suit sitting by him may have been BILLY LEE. The television screen became so snowy after this that I dozed for awhile. I awakened as I heard someone calling out, Umatillal” and saw a huge Pan-American airliner coming down on a modern airport runway, Walking down the gang plank came a jolly, fat man dressed in a foreign-cut suit. LAMAR CALHOUN? It sure was. The Umatillians shouted wel- come to their native son, who with his brother Charles, has developed the largest cotton field in the world down in South America. All the operations are conducted by a pushing of buttons and growing rich and fat. Next came a character hailed as DR. WINGFIELD. John D. hiraself-professor of science, hobbies and inventions. He has been doing research in Alaska, and has succeeded in inventing a washing machine which washes, wrings, dries, irons, and folds up the clothes said Mrs. BARBARA BRYANT WINDHAM, who has lived there for eight years, and has had her wash freeze up evory Monday. Mrs. LILLIAN BAYLOPEDGE said she would like to try one here in Florida where her problem was hot weather. Maybe such a speedy machine would keep her cool. DORIS TILLEY, who wons the Swatzy Beauty Salon In the rapidly growing city, wonder- ed if she should have one installed to clean her dirty customers pronto. The scene sped along Umatilla's beautifully paved avenues and I sav; a skyscraper standing about where I thought the old Cripple Children's Home used to be. Someone came out of the door-CHARLOTTE WORKMAN-rosy cheeked and curly haired still. Little children greeted her with smiles. Other nurses balking nearpby said she had worked for years as scrub woman at the old Children's Home and that they had promoted her to Nurses'Aid In the new one. One of the nurses in care of the smaller children was SARA RUTH BATES whose face shown with happiness and love for her charges. A long, black car driven by a chauffeu pulled up at the curb. The chauffeur was our little GLADYS PULLIAM. She opened the door and handed out Miss JELEMAN Williams who inherited a fortune from unnamed sources and uses it to build up a better Una tilla. Well, that seems to cover the clas , except for the teacher and CAROLYN PECK. Maybe I m she, but I don't know think I am. I've turned all the dials, but I can't find Mrs. EDWARDS. Maybe she Is still rushing around. Anyway, I'm writing this so that I can mail It to the Eustis Gazette as my feature of the week. These Bulldogs of •52 - 53 started off the season with a bang by trimming Clermont 19-14. Then they ran into trouble and lost six games straight before getting back into the win column. The Bulldogs edged Lyman for their second win before losing their last game to Tavares 18-6. The Bulldogs scored 92 points and had 203 points scored against them. They were led in scoring by Gerald Lucas who had 55 markers to his credit. Other Bulldog Scorers Were: Billy Merrill (12), Billy Bryant(9), Polly Williams(9), Elliot Seabrook(6), and Lyle Graham(l). Compared with Umatilla's recent good football teams, this years team ran into a lot of trouble. This was due to the inexperience of the boys, many of them playing football for the first time this year. Coach Scarborough thinks his young, talented, boys have the will and determination to make a good season next year. We students of U.H.S. are rooting for you, win, lose, or draw. C- J? C, C ia rn vL The Lady Bulldogs of old U.H.S. went through the regular season and C.F.C. Tournament without a defeat. The only blemish on their re- cord was in the finals of the District Tournament, when Tavares edged them by one point. These girls were led by high scoring Doris Tilley, Jakey Houlberg, and hustling June Turek at the forward posts. We had some terrific guards in Ruth Hudson, Bet Skinner, and Carolyn Skinner who had a lot of help from Ann Nelson, a promising Sophomore. You can base the girls wonderful season on team work and of course the Coach, Miss Elsie Zellman, who deserves a lot of praise! fyu WTTjlAMS); .v 1st row, left to right: Vernon Williams, Pruitt Hall, Lamar Calhoun, Ted Martin. 2nd row, left to right: Coach Lowe, Jerry Clark, Ronald Green, Lamar Kenney, Ralph Cadwell.
