HB FOOTBALL l96l could possibly be rated the most successul season for the Grant Bee Football team. A 3-5 record is not typical of a good season, but despite the loses, all the games were close. The first game was a non-league one with Granada Hills which Grant lost, l2 to 7. Rich Klein scored Grant's only touchdown. The first league game was lost to North Hollywood, 7 to O, in spite of superior play on both offense and defense. The offensive line, led by Carl Zitkovich and Ken King, provided excellent blocking for Grant backs. How- ever, bad breaks set up North Hollywood's winning touch- down. Grant won its first league victory by upsetting the highly-rated Monroe squad. Excellent running by fullback and team captain Dave Day helped set up the only touch- down, a pass from Jeff Pentland to Myron Greenberg. The Grant Bee's drew their second league defeat, l9 to O, from a big, fast, and hard-charging San Fernando team. Despite long passes from Jeff Pentland to Bennie Samuel, the Tiger defense held Grant to no score. Grant's second league victory came by defeating Sylmar, 20 to 0. Fine offensive blocking accounted for the success of the running game. Good gains by halfback Ron McMackin and fullback Dave Day drove to the goal line on three occasions. The Bee gridders met league champs Van Nuys in a disappointing 25 to 6 defeat. Grant's only touchdown was a long pass from Jeff Pentland to Bennie Samuel. An afternoon contest with the Crespi-Carmelite JV squad produced the Bee's third shutout and victory, 20 to O. Grant scored the first touchdown on a short pass at the end of the first half and came back in the second half with two long touchdown runs. Perhaps the most exciting and closest game of the season ended in defeat when the Lancers lost to the Poly Parrots, l2 to 7. Hard tackling and good offensive line play paved the way for Grant's only score, a one yard plunge by Brooks Kenessey.
