GRANT HIGH VARSITY FOOTBALL Grant High's l96l football season can be best des- cribed with two words-bad luck. The team won three times and lost five, but the record could easily have been six and two. This year, Grant had an excellent line. The group was headed by All-Valley guard Ed Milmeister, outstanding tackle and captain, Paul Craig, and iunior Steve Collins, left tackle. A leading back was Tom Aungst, a shifty halfback with a sprinter's speed. The season started as the Lancers dropped a non- league encounter to Granada Hills, I2 to 0. The game was marked by Grant's inability to score and defensive difficulty. The season's high point was reached when Grant defeated North Hollywood, I2 to 6, in a game that was decided in the last 30 seconds. The Lancers moved the ball well all evening, with Mike Campbell scoring both touchdowns. Grant then lost two straight, to Monroe, I4 to 0, and to San Fernando, 40 to 12. The first was decided by fumbles, the second by the inability of the Lancers to cope with the blazing speed of the Tiger backs. Offensive fumbles again hurt the team. Two 50 yard touchdown passes from Q.B. Flip Knox to Aungst were the only points for Grant. Next came a 40 to 6 rout of Sylmar. Craig made a touchdown on a tackle-eligible pass and the second half saw the successful debut of tenth grade Q.B. Bob Long. The Van Nuys game was typical of the season. The Grant line completely annihilated the Wolf line, but at game's end the scoreboard read 26 to 7, Van Nuys. Two fumbles on kickoffs and three interceptions turned Van Nuys marches into four quick scores. The Crespi Carmelite game was won 6 to 0 by the Lancers, in the last minute of play. Poly defeated Grant 31 to 0 in the season's finale but the half-time activity was fabulous!
