-1i .... i .l 99 44-100 Per Cent Parc A slight breeze may be the harbinger of a mighty gale. That soft zephyr that gently fondles a stray lock of hair which has escaped from the jaunty brim of a pretty girl's new spring bonnet may glide on, gather- ing velocity, and cause the ruin of many beautiful and stately things. Just such a breath of Nature had the gust that was trying to disjoint the Der- ling home green in the early March afternoon, but now, at twenty-two minutes past ten o'clock, the small frame building seemed likely to do no less than soar. In fact, the only means of anchorage seemed to be Mr. Angus Derling, who was sitting firmly on the front porch with his coat collar turned up about his neck, his old fishing hat jammed solidly over his two ears, his hands planted in his pockets as if to add more weight to his sitting, and a scowl on his face that seemed to cause the wind to gasp as it drove past. The reason for Mr. Angus Der1ing's determination to defy the ele- ments was that he was thoroughly disgusted with those elements and any- thing and everything connected with them. The wind and the rain and the sun were his gods, and they had betrayed him. He had talked to the weather and confided in it. He had revealed his innermost secrets to that same wind. While riding his tractor, planting his flower garden, feeding his chickens, and hunting and fishing in his woods and streams, he had hoped soon to have a little companion, someone he might teach to love the great outdoors as he did. And in his mind the winds had heard his prayer and had promised him a son. Now, how he would like to throw things at that traitor, the wind. He was the father of a daughter, and she had been christened Ann, very much against his wishes. Being a girl was unfortunate, but, bearing that name, sne could never learn to fish. A year passed, and Mr. Angus Derling had learned that the only safe ylace for anything movable, breakable, swallowable, or marrable was on the highest possible shelf. Even then there was a chance of something left dangling to be pulled and so dislodge much. Ann was still only some- thing Mr. Angus Derling must rock and stay within doors to mind, some- thing he could rave about only to the winds. Fortune smiled elsewhere, and the Derling luck was smitten. A mort- gage threatened to take away his beloved hills, streams, and acres. The only truly prospering object was Ann. She giggled and annoyed with the vim and vigor of a professional. Then came that fatal day that no man can help but dread, that day when a man was expected from the city bank to present a foreclosure. The very hour approached. Mr. Angus Derling was facing departure from his wilds and life in a three room apartment in a grimy city, with no chance to escape from Ann-with no fish to catch. P An arriving automobile was discerned, and from the upstairs of his cozy home Mr. Angus Derling watched a dapper, grey clad figure bound along the walk that wound through his flower garden and mount to the front door. The visitor was admitted. It was mysterious how one on PAGE TWENTY-THREE

Hale McCowen Fresbfrzazze lass The Freshman Class of 1931 entered school on September 21, 1931. The first meeting was called to order on Tuesday, September 22, the purpose being to elect officers for the coming year. Those elected were: Donald Crawford, presidentg Tommy Mercer, vice-president, Barbara Davis, secretary, Lynn Ganter, treasurerg Chaplin Williams, representative to the Citizenship Committee, and Hale McCowen, representative to the Student Council. Later in the semester, because of automatic deposal of the treasurer, Sylvia Ulvila was elected class treasurer. On December 11, the freshmen gave a costume dance in the gymnas- ium. There were prizes awarded for the best costumes. The party was a big success. Two of the freshmen boys made the A team in basketball. They were Tommy Mercer and Harvey Weatherhead. They both made a fine showing and did much credit to the class. Our hopes for the future are bright and we hope to do credit to Ultiah High. Barbara Davis, '35. PAC-E TWENTY-TWO

-1 -1 such a sinister mission could enter that door with such bouyance and in such a smiling manner. Good afternoon, Mr. Angus Derling. If you will be so kind as to sign your name just here, I shall see that all the necessary business is properly transacted. A shaking hand gripped a pen and vaguely scrawled a signature. Thank you, Mr. Derling. As representative of Proctor and Gamble Company I thank you. After a wide search you are just the father whose baby's picture we must have for our latest Ivory Soap advertisement. I take pleasure in presenting you with our check for thirty-five thousand dollars. Mr. Angus Derling swooned quietly away. Within the ensuing five years Ann learned to fish. Virginia Mathews, '32. Our School Our school is a good school, A happy and contented school, A silly school, a sober school, That teaches mental food. It is a tall and stately school, A hard school, a helpful school That helps us to the end. Our principal's a short man, A smiling and a pleasant man, A hard man, a thoughful man That guides us fair and square. A likeable and kindly man, A helpful man, a jolly man That we should all admire.
