We leave behind one section of a busy life, taking with us many happy and some not-so-happy memories. This book is dedicated to presenting a record of Uintah High School, 1963-1964. The Yearbook Staff, who did the work in this record, sincerely hope we have depicted accurately our classes, clubs, athletics, and activities. May this book be a storehouse of memo- ries for all. Marilyn Felter Editor wmm 10 JOHN L. BLAZZARD Uintah High School had quite a turnover of assistant principals this year. Mr. Craig Kennington served in this position until he was promoted to the Direc- tor of Personnel in the District Office. He was followed by Mr. Clyde Christenson who moved to the Ashley Valley Junior High School to act as principal. Mrs. Blazzard then assumed the duties in the attendance office. Mr. Blazzard was later chosen from the faculty to represent the school as Vice Principal. A vote of thanks goes to each of these people who have helped to make the year a successful one. As a wonderful athlete and as a lead in the school musicals, he has done much to represent Uintah. With his personality and friendli- ness, Dale will always be remembered by those who know him. 28 YEARBOOK PRINCESS - DORTHY MORSE Dorthy Morse, a Junior, certainly deserves the honor of Yearbook Princess. As a member of the Uintahn Staff she has done much in producing this yearbook. Dorthy is friendly to all and has the best wishes of every- one. 29 HOMECOMING QUEEN - SONJA SEARLE Our vivacious cheerleader Sonja Searle was elected Homecoming Queen by the students of Uintah. Her bright smile and lively personality have made her a favorite at Uintah. 30 Sponsored by the VERNAL SHOE STORE Vickie, our head cheerleader, was chosen as one attendant for Home- coming. We would like to congratu- late her for being such a friendly person to everyone at Uintah. VICKIE PETERSON ATTENDANTS BARBARA SOWARDS Barbara, our other Homecoming Queen attendant, is known through- out Uintah for her sweet and winning ways. To everyone at Uintah, Bar- bara is a treasured friend. 31 Seniors worked nightly to produce this prizewinning float showing the golden football under goalposts with red and white streamers, representing a Ute victory. Utm After almost a week of cloudy skies, October 25 dawned bright and clear. What a perfect day for Uintah's Homecoming ! Activities started early - 7:00 A.M. The band and Pep Club were at school prac- ticing for the parade and halftime. The Alumni Assembly started with cheer- ing and continued with laughter and applause as Glen Cooper told jokes and introduced the numbers. At the end of the assembly, our royalty was announced. Sonja Searle, candidate from the FFa, was cnosen to be queen. Her attendants were Vickie Peter- son, nominated by the Key Club, and Bar- bara Sowards from the U’ettes. The parade and aching feet came next. The float competition was keen but the Sen- ior Float won the class competition. The Junior Float was second. In the club compe- tition, the Spanish Club, for the fifth year The Thespian Float with a large football, a block U, a football player, and a cheerleader took second place in the club competition. 32 in a row, walked away with the prize. The Thespian Float was second with the Pep Club third. The Uintah-Union football game with a 30-6 victory for the Utes was a highlight of the day. The band and Pep Club presented the halftime entertainment to the accompa- niment of applause. The Pep Club and the band marched at halftime, making a very colorful show which was enjoyed by the students and visitors. The Homecoming Dance with the deco- rations spotlighting different phases of school activity was well attended and we were able to welcome back our friends who had graduated. The dance was a perfect ending to an event-filled day. The Pep Club, with additional help, made Victory Mums in the girls’ locker room Thursday night after the Pep Rally. The Spanish Club Float with the sound of castanets won the club competition. Janet Alexander and Donald Joseph rode on this float. 33 Girls asked boys for a new dance at Uin- tah this year - the Sadie Hawkins Dance. This was the joint project of the Pep and Varsity Clubs. Royalty for the Sadie Hawkins Dance was Colleen Hammond, Mammy Yokum; Kay Henderson, Daisy Mae; Dale Lee, Li'l Abner; and Howard Busch, Pappy Yokum. The gym was decorated in old news- papers - they covered the walls, ceiling, and marrying booth. Many couples said I do 'till the dance is over. A floor show presented by the Pep Club was in the form of a hillbilly dance that never stopped until the record was over. Royalty for the evening was chosen and announced at the dance. Daisy Mae was Kay Henderson and Li'l Abner was Dale Lee. Colleen Hammond was Mammy Yokum and Howard Busch was Pappy Yokum. 34 The F.H.A. and F. F. A. Clubs this year presented the annual Harvest Ball with the theme It’s Twilight Time. The assembly in the afternoon presented new talent as a new nightclub opened. It went smooth- ly with frequent encores that kept the student body after the final bell. The reigning queen was Marsha Eaton who represented the Junior Class. The two attendants were Patsy Colobella from the Senior Class and Dayle Sessions from the Sophomore Class. There were four divisions: Homemaking Classes, Girls’ Day Contest, Junior Prom Formals, and Graduation Suits. Mrs. Morris was the announcer. In the evening, the girls took the boys to the Girls’ Day Dance. The theme was Carousel. The Utopians, Uintah's own dance band, provided the music. Mrs. Webb announced the winners of the contest at the dance. These girls had to make their own dresses to enter. Byron Goodrich helps put up red and -white decorations in the gym. Graduation For Seniors, graduation started one Monday morning at 7:30 am. At this time, the first prac- tice for marching was called. Throughout the remaining weeks of school, the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance could be heard at almost any hour of the day. Graduation leaped nearer when the Seniors re- ceived their cards and announcements. For the rest of the week, Seniors walked the halls with their cards, ready and willing to trade with any other Senior. Mr. Massey and Miss Manwaring, march- ing advisors, go over last-minute details. The next week brought the signing of the Memory Books. Gripes were aired - there wasn't enough space in the book for everyone's card and signature. Still, the books were passed around and signed. The week before Baccalaureate, the caps and gowns arrived. Seniors tried them on with mixed feelings - they looked so funny! Sunday, May 24, was a beautiful day. It was perfect for the Baccalaureate Service in the auditorium. The speaker was Dr. J. Peter Bercovitz from Westminister College in Salt Lake City. Immediately after the serv- ice, pictures were taken. The Seniors lined up on the stage for one group of pictures. Then, they again filed into their seats for more pictures in their block U. During the last week of school, Seniors grew more excited. Tuesday morning in the Awards Assembly, the Seniors sang The Halls of Uintah. Even though some scoffed at the tears of many, everyone felt a little tug of sentiment at leaving Uintah. Thursday, May 28, 1964, was the day of the Commencement exercises. Talks were given by Colleen Hammond, valedictorian; Marilyn Felter, salutatorian; Terry Stagg, class president; and Brent Hall, student body president. Musical numbers were presented by a boys trio and a mixed chorus besides the traditional The Halls of Uintah. To the Class of 1964, the highlight of this past year will always be their graduation with the theme Todays Dreams - Tomorrows Realities. Upper picture: Mrs. Lube and Mr. Thomas practiced with the class many times. However, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Hansen played at the exercises. He was selected on the defensive team, and he played left corner linebacker. He never knew what the word quit meant. He would give all he had the full game. Kenny was known for his hard tackles and blocks. CONGRATULATIONS. Kenny, and good luck in the future. Hats off to Clark Robinson and Bob Pope also; they were chosen co-captains of the football team for 1963-1964. This was a great honor for these boys. It is also a big responsibility. To be a co- captain an individual must show desire to be a leader, which Bob and Clark did. Clark had the misfortune of breaking his leg in the first league game with Pleasant Grove. Even after his accident Clark came out to practice every night to give the teammates his moral support. Bob had to accept all responsibility of leadership to team by himself. He did this with great zest. Hats off to these fine students and athletics. The price of being in athletics is a big one but those who stick them out get much from them. These students will be the top citizens of tomorrow. Behind the luster of every football game and the brilliance of competition, hidden by the excitement of a colorful band, courageous cheerleaders and a frantic crowd, unnoticed by most, but respected by all, is our football coach, Lou Mele. Guiding but not leading, pushing but not forcing, this man con- structed a potent Redskin grid squad. At the most crucial times, the ability to fight back from all situations such as a team injury or a loss, proved his great leadership as a coach. Proud to be help- ing Uintah, he inspired every Ute gridder through their ambition and desire to have a fighting squad. His actions on the sidelines, his profound knowledge of the gridiron and ability to lead made Coach Mele the popular coach the fans knew him to be. The won-lost column became a small criteria when speaking of their overall achievement. More fundamental are the traits instilled in the boys by their coach, it will characterize individuals as well as a strong team. Our Ute coach created this char- acter; Ute character created teamwork; and Ute teamwork created UTE SPIRIT! HEAD FOOTBALL COACH MELE 6 PLEASANT GROVE 0 AMERICAN FORK 33 B. Y. We were undefeated in region play because of the time and effort Coach Caldwell made in shaping up our team. Although the basketball team had a successful year, everyone's hopes for an outstanding season were not quite realized. As the mighty Utes went to State Tourna- ment at Provo, Lady Luck seemed to desert the team. Losing to Dixie the first day by a slim margin and to American Fork the second day, the Utes were out of the tournament. Uintah's 1964 basketball team was one to be proud of. Not only did it take region and go state, but the team was com- posed of many outstanding students and school leaders. TO THE ATHLETIC TEAMS: When years have passed, each of us shall look back upon our varied activities with fondness and gratitude - the games, marches, bake sales. State, banquets, and untold hours of work toward the build- ing of better school spirit. Now these happy days are gone and only the memories of them will linger on. We as a Pep Club are proud of the things that the boys of Uintah have accomplished as teams and as individuals. To those who will be back next year, we wish record-break- ing success. We hope those who are not to return will continue to use to the best advantage the knowl- edge and experience they have gained in this wonder- ful program. We are very proud of you boys, and we'd like to thank you for the way you've represented Uintah and the standards you have upheld. We'd like to thank the Administration and our advisors. They have helped us in untold ways to accomplish the goal we've all been working for. We have wonderful coaches. They are men every young man would be proud to follow. We'd like to s.ay, Thanks, to everyone who has helped to make this year possible. FROM THE U'ETTES Pep, enthusiasm, and originality symbolize the cheerleaders for '63 and '64. Each school activity was en- livened by the efforts put forth by these four girls. At the pep assemblies, the cheerleaders worked hard to instill the spirit of the Utes in the various teams and the student body. Their voices could be heard ringing through the halls before each game. Much work went into the preparation of their routines, as was evident as they led the students in yells and songs during games. They did a very outstanding job and were cheerleaders that U. H. S. could be proud of. 93 Uintah Uintah Uintah Uintah Uintah Uintah Uintah- Uintah Uintah Uintah Uintah Uintah 34 Carbon 9 Craig 18 Steamboat 46 Carbon plS vWasatch 20-, jj yptaig .Ujiion East Carbon Union - o' North Summit Morgan 19 East Carbon 5 9 Wins 3 Losses Co-captains Ken Stringham, Bob Pope, and Kent McCurdy dis- cuss upcoming schedule with Coach Mele. The Utes came out on top with a 5-0 victory. With the Region Championship under their belts, the Utes were entitled to play the Judge Memorial Bulldogs in the semifinals. Against Judge., Coach Lou Mele pitted Gary Tassainer on the pitching mound. Gary had not only pitched to Judge brilliantly but has pitched several no-hitters and shut-outs this year. When the game ended fifteen innings later, Gary had pitched all of the fifteen inning marathon, with a final score of 1-4. This knocked the Utes chance of taking state. The graduating seniors are a group of really fine players: Eddie Oaks, captain and first base; Howard Busch, third base and pitcher; Kelly Goodrich, third base and left fielder; Kent McCurdy, center fielder; and Jack Stanfill, shortstop. Willard is not only a fine field man but an excellent hurdler too. He was second in the finals at the Snow Invitational. Because of his out- standing performance at the invitational, Willard received the trophy for the high point man. In the Region meet, held at Uintah, Willard won his specialties--the discus, the shot, and the high hurdles. He set a new mark in the discus, bettering the old record by seven feet. By taking the low hurdles in stride, Bob took first in the Re- gion meet. At the State Track Meet, Bob came thru with a third in the low hurdles, and Big Will took second in the discus and fourth in the high hurdles. 105 Coach Chad Orton Bob Alexander represented Uintah very well in the 180- yard run, 880-relay, 100- yard dash, and the low hurdles. 106 . Co-Captains Bob Alexander and Willard Perry admire the trophy which Willard won at the Snow Invitational Meet for being high-point man. Willard Perry did excellently this year in the shot put, the discus throw, and the high hurdles. This was done so the students of Uintah could receive a paper each week instead of every other week. Many thanks goes to this group of students who worked hard to find enough news to fill the paper each week and keep Uintah students informed on all phases of school life. 114 Delora Thomas Feature Editor Linda Simper Society Editor Jacque Sutton Reporter Connie Haws Reporter h cv Art John Babb and Humor Editor Chuck Risbon Sports Editor Neal Dastrup Smoke Signals' £taH Cleata Risbon Editor Dale Lee Secretary Bob Pope Social Director Clark Robinson President Kent McCurdy Vice-President Coach Bill Caldwell Advisor Richard Wedig .ane Fletcher Robert Downard Willard P.erry The Pep Club has done much this year to keep the Spirit of the U shining bright. Ringing voices in the halls and gaily deco- rated posters were a natural part of the prep- arations for the various games and activities. The Pep Club was always on hand at the pep assemblies, for their enthusiasm and PEP helped make each one a success. Presenting half-time stunts for the games was their most important duty. Each girl worked hard to learn her part, and the fin- ished product was a thrilling sight to see. Hats Off” to a very successful group after a very successful year.
