Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1963 volume:

I — As the school year draws to a close, many of us will be leaving these halls for the last time; while others will be returning to continue their education. In looking back over our school days we will remember with fondness the many dances, games, and plays in which we participated. We will remem ber that the wheels of our school were made to go ’round by friends, teachers, extra-curricular, and classroom activities. I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds--and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of--wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew— And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out rny hand and touched the face of God. John Gillespie Magee, Jr. Mr. Leland G. Rex Principal Celand Q. Dear Students: Today the world faces many difficult problems. There are times when the future does not look bright. Civilization is undergoing one of the most severe tests it has ever faced. I ear- nestly believe that tomorrow will be a day of deeper understanding and a period of world advancement and prosperity. With this thought in mind, we should look at the opportunities Uintah High School offers to each of us. It offers each of you a well-balanced high school education. Some students take advantage of these opportunities while others pass them by. Whether or not you are prepared for life's work, and to help with this complex world, depends largely upon your attitude while attending high school, and the effort you put forth. There is nothing that will help you in the future as much as a good education. I hope each of you will have as your major goal in life, an education which will help you meet your future needs as a citizen of these great United States. Mr. Rex, Principal Vice-Principal John L. Blazzard Board of Education Sjecuicusu, and Mrs. Hardy Bookkeeping The front office runs smoothly under the capable direction of Mrs. Hardy. She is very helpful to all the students, and under her direction many students are learning the fundamentals of office work. Mrs. Caldwell Type Business Mrs. Jean Peterson Mrs. Pat Campbell The objective of the Uintah High School Business Department is the development of the skills and knowledge that will be useful and helpful to students in obtaining positions in the business world and in the management of their own personal affairs. IndusieiaC Atis The Industrial Arts Department strives to provide vocational train- ing for those students who have chosen their occupations and who wish to prepare themselves to enter employment in direct or related fields upon graduation from high school. It gives foundation skills, knowledge and understandings to industrial occupations to students who plan to continue their educa- tion in technical or engineering fields, and also assists in fulfulling students needs for high school grad- uation and coordinates his vocational training with his various other classes. Mr. Charles Freeman 5 ittifif $ The purpose of Social Studies is to help the student be successful in a democratic society. He should become a responsible, creative, cooperative, open-minded individ- ual. He needs to know the dem- ocratic process, appreciate the opinions of others, to learn to think critically and creatively. He needs to develop the ability to use problem-solving skills and to know how to locate, select, or- ganize and use information effec- tively. He needs to appreciate and respect others regardless of race, creed, color or other social barriers, and be aware of needs and problems of others. He needs to achieve something worthwhile and find his place in a democratic soci- ety. Mr. Harold E. Hullinger txluCcdi H The purpose of Physical Education is to train the individual in a skillful performance of the activities, to acquire attitudes toward the enjoyment of play and to achieve habits of con- duct according to estab- lished standards. Mr. Louis Mele Mr. Richard Stoney S xJUjmc Mr. Bill Caldwell The purpose of the Advanced Earth Science Class is to give the student a meaningful and working knowledge of his surroundings which influence his way of life. It is the purpose of the Science Department to help students rec- ognize the many facets of science that are present in our daily lives. Also to recognize that most of the forces of nature can be controlled to serve man, if he has the knowl- edge. Let’s gain that knowledge! Mr. Richard Stoney Mr. Bart Nelson Mr. Roy Smith and htlcdh We are teaching approximately 300 students in the various mathe- matical skills. Roy Smith, Bart Nelson, and Bill Caldwell are the notorious instructors. The class- room situation wasn't good; we used the cafeteria, physics room and A. V. A. room as our teaching station. All in all, we have had a good year in math, and we are looking forward to greater heights next year. Mr. John Blazzard Mr. Valda Massey Mr. Wells Mclnelly Mrs. Wilma Webb LiAtJOucy, He ate and drank the precious words, His spirit grew robust; He knew no more that he was poor, Nor that his frame was dust. America is an integral part of organization, leadership and regular class room work. Mrs. Freda Davis fjLM Ax£ The Art courses at Uintah High School are designed with a twofold purpose in mind: The first is to give the student who has the desire and the abil- ity to enter the different fields of professional art the background they need. We also aim to give the student a way of expression. Hence, we have the second fold of the purpose. Not every student who enters the art program in Uintah will become successful artists. They don't have the desire or the ability. To these students we attempt to give an appreciation of what art is. MR. ARON THEDELL The speech classes at Uintah have as their mottos We learn to speak by speaking and Thorough preparation is the best fear remover. Skills of speaking are an asset to everyone everyday. MR. ELLIS WORTKEN The Music Department has as its main goal developing talents and interests of students to their fullest. Many types of music are performed and studied--from pop music to the heaviest classics--in order to accomplish this goal. The only minitations placed on a stu- dent’s advancement are those he sets for himself. Many opportunities arise throughout the year for solo and small group work and all students who are interested are given a chance to participate. Each year the music department participates in two music concerts, a music festival and a broadway musical. Mr. Aaron Hansen Mr. Wells Mclnelly The Guidance Depart- ment attempts to help the individual to understand and use wisely the educa- tional, vocational and personal opportunities they have or can develop, to give assistance to aid stu- dents achieve satisfactory adjustment to school and life, to help students gain self-knowledge, and to help them become increas- ingly self-directive and capable of creative and purposeful living. Guidance is not made up of analysis and advice, adjusting student lives, or problem solving. It is mu- tual appraisal of problems, mutual explorations of possible actions, mutual decisions on plans for solving situations.
