I'd like to think when life is done That I had filled a needed post, That here and there I'd paid my fare With more than idle talk and boast; That I had taken gifts divine. The breath of life and manhood fine. And tried to use them now and then In service for my fellow men. — Guest Yearbook Productions Orem, Utah The Yearbook Staff of '55-'56 is proud to present the Uintahn for the enjoyment of those who open its covers. The boys who worked under him join everyone in saying Thanks, Coach, for a good job during your first year here at Uintah. Tommy Alexander Joe Bartlett Sonny Beacham Jimmy Abegglen b nil In '55 Uintah used a formation new to our players — the single wing. During the year the fans saw many great end runs and good pass defense for certain plays available through this formation. The tricky double re- verses our boys used were always a thrill to watch. We had one Ute who brought to Uintah extra recognition by being placed on the All-State first team in Class B schools. This was Gordon Horrocks playing guard. He was a much respected man, both on the gridiron and off. Uintah took honors again by having five men placed on the regional All-Star team. This was more than that which was represented by any other team in our region. Those chosen were Johnnie Robbins, center — anyone who has seen him play will say that he needs no introduction, he had the important position on defense: Jerry Cutshaw, tailback — one of our Co-Captains who was the spark of the team, it will be a long time before he is forgotten at Uintah for the fine work which he has done in athletics. Bill Walker, guard—a good man to have on any team. Gary Slaugh, left end — another of our Co-Captains, Gary won't be forgotten soon for we can still remember him deep in the oppositions territory wait- ing to catch that pass for extra yards and points; and Gordon Horrocks, guard we've already mentioned him, but his team mates needed his courage and morale to chalk up those extra yards. We could go on and mention the good qualities of all of the team members such as the bril- liant running of sophomore Don Seymour, Duane Criswells center blunges, just all-around good work by Gary Case, fine kicking by Ron Francke, fine work by the Lee brothers (as usual), and on and on, but we must stop somewhere! In '55 Uintah placed third in our region. We are proud of our boys and the fine sportsmanship that they have exhibited in all of their games. There are many memories of long passes or hard runs that will always be remembered. We knew our football team as a much better team and so did the teams that had to face them. They were respected by all who played them and rightly so. Working with Coach Conk this year in football was Coach Allen. He was always on hand to help instruct our boys to fight a good clean, hard game and the results are the examples of his fine teachings. In our first game Uintah lost a heartbreaker to Wasatch 7-0 in the final minute of the game. Next, we took the Craig Bulldogs by the neck and went on to a 14-7 victory. In our first conference game we reddened the Moab Devils to the tune of 14-6. We had proved we ranked with the best. In our game at Union, Uintah lost two of her main players — Doyle Davis, our quarter- back, suffered a broken leg and did not see any more action that year Also Vard Butch Shiner received a dislocated hip that put him out of play for most of the remaining season. We lost to the Union Cougars 16-0. Had we not lost these two great football players — well, who knows? In our two final nonconference games we found that we were out classed by our rivals. We were de- feated 6-21 by BY High at Provo and 7-21 by Meeker, Colorado. In the Craig game Doyle Davis runs another of his famous end runs. Final score was 14-7 in favor of Uintah. Midway in the season Uintah lost to Moab 12-0 on the Devils gridiron. Those fans who saw the game will long remember it. It was a well fought game and our Utes did not fail us in their fine showing. Our final season game and also our Home- coming game was lost to Union 13-0. Robert Stringham Bill Walker Gerald Walker Vern Wilkins Danna Mar Herbert Danna Mar, Allene, Lois, Theresa SCHOOL SONG A valiant band of warriors brave From Uintah High are we In every fight we'll lend a hand To strive for loyalty We'll fight them fair in work or play We'll beat them square in every way We can't be beat, you'll always hear us say. Our fighting Utes are ever out to win Our warriors bold take nothing less, We'll ever scalp dame victory, yes We'll ever fight for U. H. S. Fight! Fight! Aliene Colder During the school year of 55 and '56 Uintah was very fortunate in having the best cheerleaders that they have ever had. These girls work- ed very hard in perfecting their cheers and pep assemblies. Many people noticed that they were the most conscientious group in the high school. All of their cheers were done with precision and determination, many long hours were spent in achieving these heights. We, the students of Uintah High, are proud and priviledged to have such won- derful cheerleaders. SPORTSMANS CREED The player lives clean and plays hard. He plays for the love of the game. He wins without boasting, He loses without excuses and never quits. He respects the officials and accepts their decisions without question. He never forgets that he represents his school. Lois Goodrich Three of the more beautiful girls of our campus were chosen to be cheerleaders. They were Danna Mar Herbert, Allene Colder and Lois Good- rich. These girls went through the football season helping greatly to improve school spirit. Then when Basketball season rolled in they were bolstered with the addition of one more beautiful girl. This was Theresa Allen, daughter of our basketball coach, Thair Allen. It is the accepted belief that these co-eds have done more to improve school spirit than that which would have been possible by any other group. Danna Mar, Theresa, Allene, Lois Far left Bryson of Uintah goes in for a shot as he is heavily guarded in the Wasatch game. Bryson is one of the most promising of the Juniors on our squad. Right Eaton towers above Rangely's players as he shoots one of his special shots. He could always be counted on to be one of the top scorers on our team. Barr and Wells of the alumni go down court as Eaton and Lee of the Varsity close in. BBSKETBfiLL ■■■■■Hi Thciir G. Allen Coach Alien's second year ot Uintah marked his first year as basketball mentor. Coach Allen was admired by all with whom he came in contact for his terrific leadership and sportsmanship. Thanks goes to him for making our basketball team, for without him it could not have been as great as it was. 1955-'56 marked one of the greatest basket- ball seasons ever seen at Uintah. Th's year also marked the third straight year that Uintah has taken first place in our division. Many tributes were payed to our terrific redskins. The Deseret News basketball poll rank- ings had us rated first in the state for Class B teams for three consecutive times. Before that they were in scond place for two weeks. Another highlight of the season was the Union Cougar defeat at the hands of the wonderful Utes by 24 points. The entire student body was very proud of the team and grateful for the fine recognition that they brought to our school. 49 Jim Abegglen Jim Phil Bryson Rollo Bill Caldwell Bill Jerry Cutshaw Cutty VaLoy Eaton Moose Wayne Gardiner Sam Rodney Grimme Rod Morgan Lee Morg Gary Lyman Luke Ronald Francke 'Ron Manager Gary Slaugh Slick 'Wayne' Jim Abegglen recovers a ball as Cutty and Rollo try to help him, during the Union game. We were matched with the determined Altamont Long- horn quint in our first conference game. This game was played on our floor. The Utes played well and in the latter minutes of the game, pulled ahead to win 67-45. Next, we traveled to Tabiona where the Utes scalped the Tigers. Uintah had little difficulty in this game as the final score of 68-26 showed. Uintah did not have much opposition and led the game all the way. The final score was 78 26. The next Friday saw the Utes entertain the visiting Union Cougars in our new gym. The first quarter of the game saw the two teams nip and tuck; however, the rest of the game belonged to our tremendous Utes. Uintah handed Union, our bitterest rivals, a defeat our school will never forget. The Cougars were skinned by a final score of 60-36 by our great sharp-shooting Utes! In a mid-season non-conference game Uintah downed the North Sevier Wolves by a final score of 54-45. Altamoni gave us a fine game in their new gym; however, Uintah beat the Longhorns 43-32. This was a well played defensive game with not too much scoring. This was a great triumph for the team as the same Longhorn qu'nt had, just one week before, beaten the Union Cougars by one point. Tabiona put up a strong first quarter against the Utes. Uintah was far superior on the floor, leading by a final score of 64-38. Kollo goes in for a lay-op despite efforts of Union Cougars to divert him. Slough makes an easy lay-up. State Tournament! The Utes are going to State! This is a sample of the cries heard at Uintah between our defeat of Duchesne until the halls were deserted by loyal Utes who had gone to Provo. While at tournament the students were permitted to see the greatest teams in the state playing against each other. In our first game we were matched with the Morgan Trojans. Th Utes just couldn't keep pace with them and were defeated 58-43. The next night saw the Utes defeated by the Cedar City Redmen. This was a very close game as the score of 51-52 shov s. We were very proud of the Utes in this, the final game of the entire season. After tournament the list of the state all-stars were posted. Uintah v as rightly proud when our studentbody President, VaLoy Moose Eaton, was named on the first team. Congratulations go to AAoose and the entire team for the wonderful year of basketball here at Uintah. Many are the memories that will long be remembered of this past year cf basketball. In the final home game of the season Uintah tallied most of its points in one game to run roughshod over the Duchesne Eagles 82-39. This was the game that cinched Ihe Uintah division championship for our power- ful Utes. In Ihe final conference game the Utes traveled to Union to meet their perennial rivals. The final score was 48-44 in favor of the Union Cougars. Our Utes play- ed a great game but it was at the foul line that Uintah lost. It looks os if Wayne is trying to do the hula. 'B IEnm The B team this year showed great prom- ise for the future. Under Coach Leo Conk the learn won every game they played against any other B team. The people, who came to see this outstand- ing team play, were not disappointed in the terrific action which was displayed. Our B team won eight conference games and also won seven non-conference games. When our boys were matched with a split main team from North Sevier, they were downed by a 58-44 score. This is one of the greatest records ever held by a Uintah B team. Every man on the team showed great sportsmanship and playing ability. The greatest future promises are Bob Goodrich, Don Sey- mour, Kay Workman, Terry Hadlock, Larry Lee, and John Gardiner. In fact we could name the whole team in this category. Because of the fine showing of our B team, Uintah Alumni can be assured of great success from Uintah teams in the future. Most of the team was composed of sophomores and juniors, therefore Uintah may be counted on in the future to have a great wrestling team. At the state wrestling meet held at Millard, Uintah tied with Wasatch High from Heber for sixth place with thirty-three points. There weer eighteen schools that participated in this meet. They are: Eugene Manwaring, Gerald Walker, Gary Slaugh, Paul Guillory, Larry Pope, Larry Burke, Doug Hadlock, Lynn Anderson, Lee Caldwell. Absent when picture was taken were Valoy Eaton, Marlin Moon and Ralph Caldwell. 66 In a democracy we learn to make wise selections. However, sometimes our selections are unavailable and we have classes forced upon us. Many students paid their yearbook deposit at registra- tion. This proved to be very efficient and more convenient than in previous years. Lynn Anderson, a newcomer this year, was the winner of the annual I Speak for Democracy contest. May Beck, left, ran a close second with Zetta Lee coming in for third place. Congratulations to these three outstanding seniors. 67 Th e Utes this year were presented with many fine assemblies and lyceums, all of which were very educational and entertaining. Thanks goes to the Service Bureau for helping to improve the quality of the assemblies. Also appreciated is the help of the stage crew and everyone else that helped assemblies in any way in our wonderful new auditorium with all of its modern facilities. This picture is shown Beck to Beck. May makes like a cougar that has just about been had. The hunter is portrayed by Jean in the Union Assembly. 68 Norma Jean Hacking and Doug Hadlock harmonize very well to the tune of Winter Wonderland. Their pianist was Laura Fox. Christmas Assembly. Each member of the audience was left to decide for himself whether or not Elwood P. Dowd, a retired and ec- centric inebriate, actually did have a six foot white rabbit named Harvey for a friend. Either his sister, Veta Louise Simmons, did not believe it or did not want to, because she had him committed to a santiarium — or, that is, tried to have him committed. Elwood's neice. Myrtle Mae Simmons, thought he was just plain crazy. His old friend Ethel Chauvenet thought he was insane and fled. The nurse at the santiarium, Ruth Kelly, figured he was just a lovable old character. Her boy friend, Lyman Sanderson, diagnosed Elwood as harmless, but suffered from hallucinations. The orderly, Duane Wilson, didn't like him and tried to poke him in the nose. Dr. William Chumley wanted to lock him up, Dr. Chumley's wife, Betty, took him to be a colorful and oldfashioned gentleman. His family attorney. Judge Omar Gaffney, didn't care what was wrong with him and wanted him left alone. The taxi driver, E. J. Lofgren, who delivered Elwood to the rest home, said he was happy and they shouldn't try to make him anything else. Tyler Advisor Jeanene Adamson Associate Editor Glade Nelson. Jeanene Licht Darylene Robbins U T E P 0 111 Marian, Go ask Mr. Knotts if Uintalk is written vet. Judy, have you checked on club news for this issue? Connie and Layne, is the script ready for Smoke Signals? These orders were just a few beina given by Darylene and Betty every fifth period in the Journalism class. Cutting stencils, proof typing, getting copy ready for the Vernal Express, and planning Smoke Signals, the Friday even- ing school news broadcast over Radio Station KVEL, were all part of the class work in Journalism. The staff work was divid- ed into three areas: Printing and writing the school paper, using the mimeograph process; public relations, workina with the Vernal Express and state newspaper correspondents; and producing Smoke Signals. You may have noticed the traffic jams created in the hall at the beginning and end of fifth period classes as the staff moved their three typewriters, mimeoscope, and stacks of papers from the Library to Room 2. The printing of the Ute Pow Wow this year was done on the office mimeograph machine by Connie Mott and Layne Powell Judy Murray, Diane Pope, Mrs. June Stewart 100 IU 0 IU Morgan Lee under the direction of Office Manager Theda Murray. In writing school news, the staff has tried to cover all school activities including club, class, intra-murals, and all other co-curricular activities of the students. Since Advisor June Stewart was Public Relations Chairman for Uintah, she prodded the staff to get plenty of articles in the Vernal Express and everyone has appreciated the coopera- tion of Publisher William B. Wallis and News Editor, E. John Jones. Thanks also goes to Salt Lake Tribune Correspondent Iva Cutshaw and Deseret News Correspondent Louis Fife for their cooperation in school publicity, even though their state editors didn't always give us the space desired. Producing the weekly school news broadcast Smoke Sig- nals, has been a good experience for staff members who formerly had mike fright. Then too, the school had a good outlet to tell parents about all the interesting happenings at Uintah High School. Thanks to KVEL Manager Lee Walker and his staff for this wonderful experience.
