DEDICATIGN The dedication of this book is to the ship and many men who have served on it dur- ing twenty-five years of service. Although it is the standard procedure for the dedi- cation to precede the text of a book, in this case it is more fitting for the dedication to come at the close of the book. Thus, the reader can better realize the reason for dedicating the book to the ship and her crew. The UI-ILMANN has seen service in the Second World War, the Korean Conflict, and the Viet Nam Conflict. The recent de- ployment to the Western Pacific wa's a vivid example that, after nearly twenty-five years, the German Raider can still steam and shoot with any ship in the fleet. The primary reason for this has been the hard work of the crew in maintaining the ship in top fighting condition. As a small reward for this devotion to duty this book is dedicated to the UI-ILMANN and her crew, in hopes that it will be a reminder to all hands of a job well done.
