T the beginning of a voyage a ship's course is set by the helm. At the beginning of a 'naval career a recruit's course is set by the training he receives. Recruit training, the helm, serves the new bluejacket as a foundation of knowledge and skills by which it becomes possible for him to steer the proper course throughout his life. The instruction a recruit receives during this period of his training can be likened to the helmsman's wheel, the spokes of which stand for loyalty :md honor, discipline and responsi- bility, teamwork and initiative. One spoke, called the king spoke , is marked differently, and is larger than the rest. This makes it pos- sible for the steersman to tell instinctively the position of the rudder. The king spoke repre- sents a man's duty to the Navy and the de- mocracy which it serves, the United States of America. VVhen the king spoke is up, the rudder is amidships, and the man at the helm knows that the ship is on the right course. From there on, all that is required is a steady hand at the helm, and a clear view from the bridge.
