SQUADRON 17 Main Base Lt. O. J. Fallert, USNR Commanding Officer Lt. M. C. Chambers, USNR Executive Officer Lt. tigl W. S. Cripe, USNR Chief Flight Instructor In battle the effective striking force of the Navy needs one primary element. This element is the Scouting and Observation missions performed by the Naval aircraft named the Kingfisher. At the Main Base of the N.A.T.B., cadets are given a complete course of instruction in flying this type of seo-going cir- craft on water. These planes are able to land and toke-off from the water. When they are based on a Battleship or Cruiser, they are catapulted from the deck of the ship. It takes a great deal of skill and training to enable a Naval Pilot to handle these planes in sailing, mooring 0nd anchoring them properly. However, in the thorough syllabus set up at Squadron 17, the graduates are as competent as the work performed by the plane itself. During their training in this squadron, cadets are given training in formation flying, extensive day and night navigation, tree and fixed gunnery, night flying, ground strafing, glide bombing and depth charge attacks on both still and moving tor- gets. Toward the end of their training, the cadets are instructed in taking off with the aid of o catapult. These graduates of this squadron ore Well proud of the work put before them,-To find the enemy and make him known. With the best training given them in Scouting and Observation, it is certain the time will come when the enemy will be found for the final battle with th U. 5. Novel Forces.
