The first ten flights consist of level flying, climbing and gliding turns, stalls, unusual positions and several different patterns which give the student correct timing and smoothness. The second stage is devoted to radio procedure. With this knowledge in radio in his mind, a cadet is given a check on his work during which he uses methods of orientation, beam bracketing, unknown beam work, and let-down procedures, which, if done correctly, will bring him back to his field. When this course is completed, cadets are sent to an advanced squadron, where, even included in the advanced syllabus, instrument flying is again stressed in order to keep them thoroughly prepared for any unexpected instrument flying. Chief Flight Instructor. llltll 3-ll lt has been stated that Naval Aviators are the best in the world. ln the complete training program very few, if any, items pertaining to aviation, are left untouched. T If, due to unforeseen circumstances, a naval aviator encounters poor weather and visual reference to the earth is eliminated, he is well equipped to continue his flight with the aid of the instruments in his plane without the danger of getting into an undesirable attitude and causing a fatal accident. lt is the purpose of the Main Base Instrument Squadron to train its students in blind flying and radio work. The Link Trainer is used to give cadets simulated instrument and radio flying before he is scheduled for a regular flight in a Vultee or an SNJ. Training in the Link is the same used in actual flight, therefore, a cadet has a good idea of what is expected of him and hovv to do it correctly before his first actual flight.
