Gates was designated as Naval Aviator No. 65, in the original two hundred fifty men who qualified. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, he was released from active duty, after the war, in February l9l9. His World War service included important assignments, involving active flying. ln July l9l8, he became command- ing officer of the U. S. Naval Air Station, Dunkerque, France. Mr. Gates' record of war service includes the award to him of the Distinguished Service Medal CUSND, the Distinguished Flying Cross lBritishJ, and the Croix de Guerre with palm lFrenchl. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French Government. Mr. Gates returned to the Navy prepared for his post with a broad background of experience in both the civilian and service fields.
