CAPTAIN ELWIN L. FARRINGTON, UNITED STATES NAVY Captain Farrington was born on October 15, 1907, in Cabot, Vermont. He enlisted in the Navy in 1925 and was graduated from the United States Naval Acad- emy in 1931. He reported to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, for flight training following duty aboard the battleship MARYLAND and the destroyer, LEA, and was designated a Naval Aviator in October of 1934. He was first asigned to Fighter Squadron 6 aboard the carrier SARATOGA, and later served with Patrol Squadrons 19, 4 and 24 in the Hawaiian and Alaskan areas. In 1940 he became Executive Officer of the Instriunent Training Squadron at the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, and was on duty there at the outbreak of World War II. ..a,.. Q y x ' , During the war he served as oberauonsf Officer CNorthern Sectorb on the Staff of Commander West- ern Sea Frontier, as Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron 91, which took part in South Pacific anti- submarine and rescue operationsg and as Anti-Subma- rine Ofiicer on the Staff of Commander South Pacific Force. Between 1945 and 1946 he was Executive Officer of the carrier CHENANGO, taking part in the Phil- ippine and Okinawa campaigns for which he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Navy Marine Corps Medal. The CHENANGO was awarded the Navy Unit Citation for service during that period. After participating in MAGIC CARPET, an opera- tion returning troops to the United States at the con- clusion of the war, he was assigned as Executive Offi- cer of the Naval Air Station, Alameda, California. A brief assignment as Operations Officer, Staff, 'Carrier Division THREE, preceded two years duty in the Pacific Division of the Military Air Transportation Service as Staff Operations Ofiicer. In 1951 he reported to the Navy Department, Wash- ington, D.C., as Head of the Air Training Branch, Ofiice of the Chief of Naval Operations. For a year he was 'Commanding Officer of the Seaplane Tender DUXBURY BAY operating in the Persian Gulf. He then returned to Washington as a student at the Industrial College of Armed Forces. In August, 1955, he again went to sea, as Commanding Oflicer of the aircraft carrier PHILIPPINE SEA. He returned to the OfHce of the Chief of Naval Operations in October, 1956, to serve as Director of the Aviation Safety Division. He served in that capacity until 1959 when he became Commanding Officer of The Naval Air Station, Alameda. He assumed the command July 1, 1959. Besides the awards received for service aboard the CHENANGO Captain Farrington has also received The American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, with four stars, The World War II Victory Medal, The Navy Occupation Service Medal, The National Defense Medal and the Philippine Libera- tion Ribbon.
