TUDE T BUDY We came from Alaska or Alabama, from 'l'okyo or Tennessee, from a large city known the world over, or from a small town known to none but its inhabitants. Selected from the fleet organization of the Navy and Mar- ine Corps by competitive examinations, or holding a congressional or pres- idential appointment to thc academy, we arrived here in October to begin our seven month course. VVe soon found that we had become part of an organization with a worthy tradition behind it. Our school, established more than thirty years ago, in 1919, is one of the oldest educational institutions in the Navy, younger only than the Naval Academy and the Naval War College, Prior to this, its first year at Newport, the school has been situated at Bainbridge, Maryland, Norfolk, Virginia, and San Diego, California. We found also that our short stay here would be crowded with activity. ln the five marking periods, averaging five weeks each, we were to cover the equivalent of a four year high school course in English, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, physics, and American history. Many of us had been away from formal education for as long as three years, and it was difficult to re- gain forgotten study habits. VVe fell quickly into the grind, however, and were soon proceeding under full steam. As the marking periods went by, each with its academic board meet- ing, many of us fell by the wayside and were returned to thesfieet - giving those of us that remained a11 even stronger incentive to work. At length in April after six months of preparation, including weeks of practice exainina- tions, we culminated our course with the Naval Academy entrance examinations. Now, at thc end of our preliminary cruise, we can pause to reininiscc over the year's events and to take stock of what the future holds for us. VVhether or not we obtained our objective of entrance to the Naval Aca- demy, we shall all recognize our tour of duty at NAPS as an invaluable educational experience and an integral part of the background that will eventually comprise our entire character and personality. These pages, then, are the records of us - our temporal imprint on the windswept monument of fame. Perhaps, before this obelisk has been re- duced to dust, we shall have occasion to ramble down memory's long cor- ridor and recall that ul, too, was here. E371
