BASKETBALL The BaTTalion organized a baske+ball Team in The Tall of I944 and made an excellenT record. lT was a crediT To The men who organized and coached iT, as well as Those who composed iT. LieuTenanT Leonard and WarranT Officer Meller are parTicularly deserving of praise for Their conTribuTions. The former conceived The idea and organized The Team, while The laTTer ,proved an excellenT coach. Prior To his enTrance inTo The service, Mr. Meller played wiTh San Jose STaTe. and San Francisco STaTe Colleges in Califor- nia. Thereaffer he was a member of The 25OTh CoasT ArTillery BaTTalion and The 2OTh Armored Division Teams. The men composing The BaTTalion Team were Burke lCapT.l, Kupka, E. R. Taylor, J. R. Moses, W. T. Moore, E. Hale, E. Peferson, J. Mack, J. L. ATTig, C. E. Moore, BaTeman, Hayes, Moore, C. Adams, E. M. Benson and F. Nees, mosT of whom had acquired previous exper- ience on High School and College Teams. DespiTe The inTense compeTiTion from oTher mem- bers of The WesTern Arkansas League while aT Camp Chaffee and The WhiTe League, aT FT. Sill, The BaTTalion was proud of The men who had won 25 ouT of 29 games. ln closing iT should also be noTed ThaT in addiTion To Those already menTioned., invaluable supporT was provided by The officers and men of The BaTTalion. BASEBALL The BaTTalion has been well represenTed in baseball since The acTivaTion of This uniT. Playing iTs firsT year aT Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, The Team finished in firsT place wiTh IO wins againsT Two losses. This year, aT FT. Sill, Okla- homa, wiTh Training schedules rendering impossible any play during June and July, iT finished second in The firsT period wiTh four wins againsT Two losses. WiTh The re- sumpTion of play The firsT parT of AugusT, The Team won one and losT one and promises To provide Tough oppo- siTion for iTs opponenfs The remainder of The season. The following enlisTed men make up The Team's rosTer: Adams, Koziel, OTTo, Taylor, Dahn, Miglio, MarTin, Niehls, Jach- insky, Hammond, Fronack, PeTerson, Hale, VoghT, Kobar, Grey, Snyder, O'Toole and Brown. SOFTBALL SofTball proved a popular pasfime in The BaTTalion, and lnTer-BaTTery games drew large and enThusiasTic au- diences. The Officer's Team ran rough-shod over iTs op- ponenTs in The OfTicer's League by finishing wiTh seven consecuTive vicTories finishing far in fronT of iTs nearesT confender. The Officer's Team was composed of The fol- lowing: Major Shearer, CapTains Rowland, VoighT, Wer- neT, WorThingTon, Busbee, Taylor and LieuTenanTs Le- Clair, STrouse, Becker and Crook. The EnlisTed Men's BaTTalion Team enfered a league in LawTon, Oklahoma and was firmly enfrenched in firsT place when iT was forced To wiThdraw due To Special DuTy AssignmenTs. The Team was made up of The fol- lowing: Hammond, Tighe, Oyurko, Nowack, Moore, Nye, Davis, Fonack, Snyder, Bowers, SmiTh, lvlaiewski, Miller, D'Angello, Range and Herron. GOLF This BaTTalion promoTed The only Enlisfed Men's Golf TournamenT, which was held aT ForT Sill and represenTed by I6 compeTing Teams. AfTer considerable compe- TiTion, BaTTery C and BaTTery A combinaTions played for The PosT Championship. The combinaTion, represenfing BaTTery C , consisTing of Cpl. Pascal and Pfc. Clapper, won over iTs worThy opponenfs 3 and 2 and was proclaimed champion. The TournamenT was such a success ThaT plans for anoTher were in progress aT The Time This volume wenT To press.
