In pasT years The RegimenT has served in several STaTe emergencies. Chief among These calls To service were The I9I3 Tlood, The Ohio PeniTenTiary Tire, relieT adminig- TraTion in The I-locking Valley, indusTrial disorders in The coal mining areas, disorders in The Sfeel areas Trom I92O To I937, and The Ohio Tlood in I937. V The RegimenT was again ordered inTo Federal Serv- ice on I5 OcTober I94O aT Camp Shelby, Mississippi as a parT oT The 37Th InTanTry Division. In February l94I, The RegimenT was Tilled To war sTrengTh by The receipT of SelecTive Service lnducTees. In December I94I The FirsT BaTTalion, I66Th InTanTry was designaTed Task Forces I28O and I29I and assigned To overseas duTy on Island bases oTT The coasT oT SouTh America. On I February I942 The 37Th Division was Triangu- larized and The I66Th InTanTry lless FirsT BaTTalionl was assigned To The SouThern DeTense Command wiTh The Second BaTTalion sTaTioned aT Texas CiTy, Texas as a parT oT The WesTern GulT Sub-secTor and The Third BaTTalion and auxiliary.uniTs sTaTioned aT New Orleans, Louisiana, as GuIT SecTor Reserve Troops. In OcTober I942 The Third BaTTalion and auxiliary uniTs were moved To ForT Bar- rancas, Florida as a parT oT The EasTern GulT Sub-secTor. On The I8Th oT July I943, The I66Th InTanTry lless FirsT BaTTalionl was relieved Trom SouThern DeTense Command and aTTached To Third Army. On 22 July I943 The Second BaTTalion, Third BaTTalion and Auxiliary UniTs were uniTecI in Camp Shelby, Mississippi. On I SepTember I943 ilqe FirsT BaTTalion -was ordered To reTurn Trom overseas lless personnel and equipmenTl and reassigned To The I66Il1 InTanTry, bringing The RegimenT TogeTher again Tor The TirsT Time in over TwenTy monThs. This reunion WGS SIIOVTL lived however, Tor on I2 SepTember I943, orders were received assigning The RegimenT To ReplacemenT and School Command wiTh The Second BaTTalion going To The Tank DesTroyer School aT Camp Flood, Texas and The remainder oT The RegimenT going To The Field Arfillery School, ForT Sill, Oklahoma. On I February I944, The I66Th InTanTry was ordered inacTivaTed. AT The same Time The Third BaTTalion I66Th lnTanTry and Company D, I66Th InTanTry were or- dered reorganized and aTTached To The 3lsT Field ArTil- lery Brigade, ForT Sill, Oklahoma. In OcTober I944 The Third BaTTalion plus Company D, began receiving overseas roTaTional reTurnees and commenced The shipping ouT oT Those men who were qual- iTied lbuT had noT served overseasl Tor overseas duTy. On 7 December I944, Company D, l66Th lnTanTry was ordered inacTivaTed. On The I9Th and 2IsT oT Janu- ary I945 The lasT enlisTed men oT The original I66Th In- TanTry were shipped To ForT Ord, CaIiTornia and ForT Meade, Maryland. This leTT The Third BaTTalion, I66Th ln- TanTry aImos+ enfirely composed oT overseas reTurnees. On I2 February I945 The Third BaTTalion, I66Th In- TanTry was inacTivaTed. This inacTivaTion removed The number I66Th Trom The War DeparTmenT LisT. The sTrengTh oT The UniT was TransTerred To Field ArTiIIery School and organized as The lnTanTry Training DeTach- menT, School Troops, Field ArTillery School under The command oT LieuTenanT Colonel Oliver l'l. Gibson. During The monTh oT June and July I945, oTTicer over- seas reTurnees were assigned To The InTanTry Training De- TachmenT and guaIiTied oTTicers lwho had noT been over- seasl were shipped To ForT Ord, CaliTornia. These oTTi- cers included LieuTenanT Colonel O. I-I. Gibson. On 2I July I945 Major John M. Eubank assumed The com- mand oT The InTanTry Training DeTachmenT, Field ArTilIery School.
