After raduation until 1920 he attended he Coast Artillery School, later eing assigned to the 16th Infantry ivision at Camp Dix. His later ssignments were Aide-de-Camp o Maj. Gen. William S. Graves, Commanding General of the lst A nfantry Division, the 6th Corps Area, Panama Canal Departmenti Company officer with the 3rd Infantry: Student of the Infantry School: Company Commander and Battalion Staff of- icer with the 29th Infantry: English instructor at the U- S. Military Academyg attended the ommand and General Staff Schools Regimental S-3 with the 33rd Infantry: Staff officer with he Chief of Infantry in Washington, D. C.g General Staff of Army Ground Forcesg Assistant ivis ion Commander of the 17th Airborne Division: Deputy Chief of Staff, Berlin District: rofessor of Military Science and Tactics at Michigan State Collegeg Chief of Staff, TRUST nd Deputy Commanding General, TRUST, and Director General of Civil Affairs, AMG, ritish U- S- Zone, Free Territory of Trieste- During World War II General Whitelaw served with the 17th Airborne Division taking art in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. His decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart nd Army Commendation Ribbon.
