CBR training enables the trainee to develop an understanding of the agents and the necessary protective action to insure his individual effectiveness under combat conditions. The Infantryman's primary defense against chemical attack is the gas mask. Trainees are exposed to practical field exer- cises and a 'tear' gas chamber to test and develop their ability to protect themselves effectively from such agents. The M-1 that trainees have grown accustomed to feels a little clumsy with the bayonet attached, but soon the individual develops skill with them as a single weapon. Bayonet training engenders a confident, aggressive spirit of power and confidence in the individual fighter. When trainees have learned the correct movements, they pass on to the second phase, which is running the Bayonet Assault Course. Running the course helps to develop the trainee's speed, balance, timing and aggressiveness. Instructions in Tent Pitching prepares trainees for the week coming up which will be spent on bivouac during the first phase of their Marksmanship Training.
