. .,A. .. . J Manual of arms First aid Free time--letter home Inspection . M-1 rifle instruction During the first week in his new training company quarters, the trainee becomes familiar with many of the duties and re- sponsibilities that will be his through-out the rest of his Army career. To use it, you've got to know how to hold it, so the trainee learns the Manual of Arms. Learning the movements and positions is a challenge to each trainee and is a very important phase of his education in becoming a soldier. Physical training is also a daily part of training. The process of conditioning the body to rigorous outdoor life is a prime need and demand of eiiective soldiering. Guard is an equally important Army duty. A thorough knowl- edge of the General Orders and a high standard of personal appearance is stressed. In combat, the guard vigil protects human lives and the responsibilities of this fact must be quickly learned. Hundreds of different commands are learned by the trainee eek and put into practice daily during drill. Hands, body, feet, and mind begin to work as one. Drill helps to mold a perfect pat- tern of movement for the trainees, until they function as a team. As in civilian life, Hhousekeepingv plays an important part in the fduties of the day? Kitchen Police is a necessary part of these duties and is assigned to each man, in turn, on a daily basis. While the Army Medical Corps has kept abreast of recent improvements in medical service, the continuing value of in- stant treatment in the iield is still of great importance. Thus, each trainee receives training in immediate application of first aid. Inspections are a test of attention to detail and the ability to follow specific instruction. This serves as an alert to the discipline of the individual-the same sort of discipline that wins battles under combat conditions.
