I, V-N., i B e 1 ' Q if , if 33 The transition from civilian to soldier is abrupt, and it has to be so. Within a few days after reporting to Fort Polk, the trainee is taking a full course of Basic Combat Training. Immediately upon arrival at the Reception Station his proces- sing begins. Aptitude tests, a classification interview, orienta- tion meetings, clothing issue, and the creation of a permanent file, all are completed in a few days. It is here that he is assigned to a training company and gets a chance to meet fellow trainees of his company. At first, the routine seems bewildering, but he soon realizes that each day is a highly organized series of events with a definite purpose-to teach him the basic fundamentals of com- bat soldiering. He knows the knowledge gained during the next eight weeks may have to be applied in the defense of his country and his own life. When trainees report to their training company areas, they have begun to understand a little of the routine that will be- come such an important part of their eight weeks Basic Com- bat T raining.
