01 RT ORD Military establishments are traditional to the residents of the colorful Monte- rey Peninsula. The picturesque Presidio of Monterey, first a Spanish and Mexican military establishment, has its history interwoven with that of the nation and of California. In 1917 the Gigllng Reservation, comprising 15,809 acres of sage brush and dwarf oak trees, was purchased as an artillery impact area for training soldiers stationed at the Presidio of Monterey. Named in honor of Ma[or General Edward Cresap Ord, who as a young second lieutenant was prominent in the early history of the region. Port Ord was originally activated in 1940 under command of the late and renowned General Joseph W. Stilwell, known and beloved to thousands as Vinegar Joe. Countless thousands of America ' s young men received training at Fort Ord during the years of World War II. Upon cessation of hostilities the Port was maintained as a military replacement center, but no large scale operations were undertaken on its 28,000 acres until July 1947 when the famous Fourth Infantry Division was reactivated. In October 1950, the Fourth Division left Fort Ord for Fort Banning, Georgia. It was replaced by the Sixth Infantry Division, comprised of some of the oldest units in the history of the nation, the 1st, 20th and 63rd Infantry Regiments, Fort Ord is one of the 10 military establishments in the United States where Infantry basic training is conducted.
