BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF MAJOR GENERAL WESLEY E. PEEL Major General Wesley E. Peel was born in Bonham, Texas, 17 December 1924. He served as an enlisted man and noncommissioned officer with the 1264th Combat Engineer Battalion in Europe during World War II returning to civilian life in April 1946. In 1948 he was graduated from Texas A8zM College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education and undertook post graduate studies in 1949, He was commissioned a 2d LT in 1949, and recalled to active duty in 1951. After serving tours of duty with the 17th Armored Engineer Battalion in Europe and the U.S. Army Engineer School at Murnau, Germany, he was assigned to the Engineer Training Center at Fort Leonard Wood. Missouri. In 1958 he completed work for a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at the Rolla School of Mines. Upon completion of the Engineer Officers Advanced Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, in July 1958, General Peel served a tour of duty with the Corps of Engineers Military Construction Program on Baffin Island in Arctic, Canada. In 1959, General Peel was appointed Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Colorado. He then attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and graduated in 1963. Following this assignment, he completed tours of duty with the 65th Engineer Battalion and HQ, U.S. Army Pacific, in Hawaii. Returning to the continental United States in 1966, General Peel assumed command of the 35th Combat Engineer Battalion at Fort Lewis, Washington, and accompanied the battalion to Vietnam as its commander in November of that year. He also served as Chief of Operations, 18th Engineer Brigade while in Vietnam, and was assigned as Deputy District Engineer of the St. Louis District in November 1967. After attending the U.S. Army War College in 1969, General Peel was assigned to command the 931st Combat Engineer Group at Fort Benning, Georgia. He assumed duties as District Engineer of the Far East Engineer District in July 1970. In July 1972, General Peel was assigned as Executive, Office of the Chiefof Engineers, Washington, D.C. He became the Engineer of the U.S. Army, Pacific, in September 1973. In July 1974, he assumed command of the U.S. Army Engineer Division, Pacific Ocean, and was responsible for military construction and civil works in Hawaii and the Pacific Theater. He was assigned as Division Engineer of the US. Army Engineer Division, North Pacific, with headquarters in Portland. Oregon, in July 1975. General Peel assumed command of the U.S. Army Training Center Engineer and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on 15 June 1978. General Peel is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, a member of the Society of American Military Engineers, and a member of Chi Epsilon, a national honor fraternity of civil engineers. His military decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit L2 Oak Leaf Clustersl, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
