Pence was born aT ForT Monroe, Virginia. on July I8. l898. l-le was com- missioned in The Corps of Engineers in I9l8 upon graduaTion from The UniTed STaTes MiliTary Academy aT WesT 'PoinT, where he ranked Third in a class of 227 graduaTes. General Pence's firsT assignmenT was as a sTudenT in The Engineer School. Camp Humphries, Virginia. Early in l92I he was made AssisTanT Engineer of The 3rd Corps Area, ForT l-loward, Maryland, his duTies during The laTTer including assignmenT as AssisTanT DisTricT Engineer aT BalTimore. in charge of river and harbors work. ' For Three and a half years, beginning in November l922, he was in charge of The RequiremenTs Branch, Office of The Chief of Engineers, VVashingTon, D. C. This was followed by Two years of Troops duTy wiTh The l4Th Engineers in The Philippines, and four years as AssisTanT Professor of MiliTary Science and Tac- Tics aT The UniversiTy of Alabama. In June I932 he was assigned as assisTanT To The DisTricT Engineer, Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was on duTy for Two years as Area Engineer in Greenville, Mississippi. Then followed Three years as assisTanT To The DisTricT Engineer aT ForT Peck, MonTana, where he had charge of Tunnel consTrucTion aT The Eorf Peck Dam. AfTer a year of sTudy aT The Command and General STaff School, ForT Leavenworfh, Kansas, General Pence was assigned, in I938, To EorT Belvoir, Virginia, as insTrucTor aT The Engineer School and as DirecTor of Training aT The Engineer ReplacemenT Training CenTer. Then followed several monThs duTy as assisTanT To The Caribbean Division Engineer in New York Cify, and Two years in The European TheaTer of OperaTions, firsT as DepuTy Chief Engineer aT l-leadquarfers of The Services of Supply in The UniTed Kingdom, and laTer as Commander of various unifs of The Services of Supply in NorTh Africa and lTaly. Refurning To The UniTed STaTes in I944, General Pence was for Two years DirecTor of Service lnsTrucTion aT The Command and General STaff School aT ForT LeavenworTh. During The nexT Two years. he was Com- manclanT for The School of LogisTics aT The same posT. ln July I948 he was appoinfed Chief of STaff, ForT Belvoir, Virginia, and a year IaTer became DisTricT Engineer, Nashville DisTricT. ln April l95O, General Pence was appoinTed Division Engineer, Ohio River Division, CincinnaTi, Ohio. l-le was assigned as AssisTanT Chief of Engineers for MiliTary Supply and ProcuremenT in WashingTon, D. C., in November l95l. On 20 April I953 General Pence was assigned To The 6Th Armored Division and ForT Leonard Wood, Missouri, as Commanding General.
