On 20 AugusT, General Eisenhower announced ThaT The Island oT Sicily was Tree oT The enemy. The 60Th deparTed The shores oT Sicily II November I943, arriving in England 25 November I943, where iT engaged in inTensive Training near WinchesTer unTil iT sailed in June I944 Tor France. As parT oT The 9Th Division, The 6OTh, aTTer landing aT UTah Beach, helped clear up The CoTenTin Peninsula. ATTer I8 days in The TronT lines The 60Th moved souTh To Les Pieux Tor a brieT resT. OuT oT This acTion, one oT The ouTsTanding hero's oT The 60Th, was posThurnousIy awarded The Congressional Medal oT I-Ionor, LT Jack BuTTs, PIaToon Leader, E Company. WiTh indomi+abIe spiriT and a Tierce deTerminaTion To lead his men, LT BuTTs reTused medical aid aTTer being wounded on The I4Th and again on The l6Th oT June.
