For This exTraordinary TeaT OT heroism, CapTain WoOdTill was awarded The Congressional Medal OT I-Ionor. Following The ArmisTice, The 6OTh InTanTry perTOrmed occupaTion duTies in Luxembourg unTiI 6 July I9I9, when iT embarked Tor New York, landing I9 July I9I9. ATTer discharging a large porTiOn OT iTs personnel The RegimenT shipped To Camp Gordon, and Tinally To Camp Jackson, SouTh Carolina where iT was inacTivaTed 2 SepTember I92I. As a UniT oT The 9Th Division, The 6OTh lnTanTry was singled ouT To Take parT in one oT The TirsT major oTTensives by an American Force in W.W. ll. During Two years OT inTensive Training Trom l94O To l942, The 6OTh lnTanTry was To earn Tor iTselT, a well earned repuTaTion as one oT The TinesT and mosT eTTicienT combaT Teams in The U. S. Army. IT also received a nick- name Go-Devils. ATTer compleTing amphibious maneu- vers in l942, The 6OTh embarked aT l-lampTon Roads. Va., arriving in NorTh ATrica on 8 November I942. ShorTly aTTer arrival The 6OTh CombaT Team was given The mission oT securing and holding The airporT serving The Town oT PorT LyauTey, N. A. This mission was compleTed aTTer 3 days oT combaT. The RegimenT reTurned To The 9Th Division locaTed in lviamora ForesT, souTh OT PorT LyauTey, French Morocco, where iT remained unTil Jan- uary I943. On I8 February I943 The 6OTh was ordered To move Toward Tunisia, and Take up posiTions in The viciniTy oT ThelepTe and Feriania recenTly vacaTed by The enemy. March I943 The 6OTh lnTanTry reverTed To a combaT Team and wenT inTo acTion againsT The enemy when iT was ordered To ioin The lsT Armored Division. Fully moTorized, The 6OTh CombaT Team aTTacked The well- TorTiTied enemy posiTion oT Diebel Goussa, a hill mass dominaTing The rail line running To The sea near STaTion De Sened. The place everybody ToughT Tor and nobody wanTed. The 6OTh launched iTs aTTack during The nighT and was singularly successTul. Company G, under The Command oT CapTain Wil- lard H. Barnwell, was ordered To police up The area near De Sened. Enemy arTillery coming Trom This Town was causing a greaT deal oT disTurbance. CapTain Barnwell wiTh PrivaTe lvloloTov, issued an ulTimaTum To The enemy garrison in Sened, Surrender or be wiped ouTf This was ignored by The enemy, whereupon G Company, wiTh lsT Armored ArTillery supporT, aTTacked Sened. This bold move caused The enemy To surrender. By audaciTy and quick acTion G Company killed or capTured nearly a BaTTalion oT The enemy and iTs supporTing arms. In April I943, The elemenTs oT The 6OTh CombaT Team were reTormed aT Bon Chebka, on The Tunicia-Algeria drive norTh, and The baTTle oT Sedienane Valley. WiTh The Corps Franc d ATrique, The RegimenT ToughT iTs way To BizerTe. Here, The RegimenT remained unTil 29 July, when iT sailed Tor Sicily, landing aT Palermo, lTaly. In The Sicilian Campaign, The 6OTh CombaT Team was called inTo acTion by The 9Th Division Commander on 5 AugusT I943. The German ArTillery Trom Troiana, had halTed The aTTack oT The IsT Division Tor 3 days. The 6OTh execuTed a Tlanking movemenT on The Germans in Troiana, by aTTacking and Taking MonTe PelaTo.
