One OT The highesT f'Top secreTs ThroughouT World War II This STaging Area dispaTched more Than a Third oT The Troops serving overseas in The various war TheaTers. Four and a quarTer million men and women were sTaged and equipped To meeT The demands oT The TighTing TronTs. The raTe and volume oT This processing reached iTs peak during one 24-hour period when 58,000 Troops were loaded and shi ped. p To care Tor The iniured and siclc an I800-bed 5TaTion I'IospiTaI was esTabIished and uTiIized laTer Tor recepTion oT wounded reTurning Trom overseas on hospiTal and ofher ships. A I-IospiTaI Train UniT Trom I.eTTerman General I-IospiTaI, San Francisco, was sTaTioned aT Camp Kilmer To TaciIiTaTe Trains oT hospiTal cars in which The individ- ual was carried To The Army I'IospiTaI nearesT his home. For TransporTaTion The largesT U. S. Army Railhead was buiIT. PiTTeen Troop Trains compleTe wiTh IciTchen cars could be loaded simuITaneousIy and dispaTched direcTIy To Tour main railroad lines. These and numerous allied TuncTions were reduced aT The close OT The war and The STaging Area was alTered To include The SeparaTion and RecepTion CenTer. In addiTion The Air Force Overseas RepIacemenT Depo+ was moved up Trom Greensboro, NorTh Carolina during SepTember I946 and began operaTion in coniuncTion wiTh sTaging acTiviTies. ATTer consoIidaTion The Personnel CenTer was oTTiciaIIy esTabIished under General Order Number 40, War DeparTmenT, I4 April I947. This combined, Tor The enTire easT coasT, The TuncTions previously perTormed by recepTion sTaTions, separaTion cenTers, overseas replacemenT depoTs and sTaging areas. Under The new TiTle, Personnel CenTer, wiTh iTs aTTendanT sTreamIining OT organi- zaTion, processing procedures became more eTTicienT and a greaT reducTion in assigned miliTary and civilian personnel was eTTecTed. Then, during The middle oT I949, in line wiTh The Economy Program, Camp Kilmer was ordered To an inacTive sTaTus and The Personnel CenTer prepared To move To PorT Dix. Processing as perTormed by The Personnel CenTer is divided inTo Two main lines. For overseas reTurnees advance rosTers are secured and machinery seT in moTion To TaciliTaTe processing upon arrival. Individuals desTined Tor separaTion are given physical examinaTions, cloThing inspecTions, Tinal pay and allowances, and a discharge cerTiTicaTe. Personnel are on hand To Turnish advice and guidance on The GI Bill oT RighTs and inTormaTion regarding VeTerans AdminisTraTion. Personnel reTurned Tor reassignmenT are given a physical examinaTion, pay and allowances due, and orders To reporT To his or her new sTaTion, These orders To include leave Time when due and requesTed by The individual. ReplacemenTs bound Tor overseas begin processing wiTh an iniTial check oT records upon reporTing. Then an orienTaTion covering liTe aboard ship and highlighTs on over- seas duTy. This is Tollowed by a Tilm on abandoning ship and a Trip down The landing neTs To Tamiliarize The soldier wiTh The proper Technique in The evenT oT disasTer. When a number oT Troops are ready Tor shipmenT, liaison wiTh The porT esTablishes The size OT ship's comparTmenTs and provisional companies are Tormed accordingly. TransienT oTTicers are appoinTed To each company Tor The Trip and These oTTicers issue inTormaTion and insTrucTion as needed. AT This poinT The OperaTions Division sTeps in wiTh Trans- porTaTion arranged To shipside and The individual is ready To move. For handling Air Force personnel The 2225Th Overseas ReplacemenT Group has been esTablished by The DeparTmenT oT The Air Force. All processing on reTurnees is accomplished wiThin The group buT individuals slaTed Tor discharge are Turned over To The SeparaTion CenTer Tor The Tinal sTage oT separaTion.
