A Acfivafed on I Ocfober I94I, fhe Division was assigned fo Forf Knox, Kenfucky, for fraining as a parf of fhe Armored Force. ln March I942 if was 'transferred fo Camp Cooke, California. Af fhis fime fhe Division was commanded by Maior General Jack W. Heard. From Augusf fo Ocfober l942 fhe 5'I'h was acfively engaged in fhe maneuvers in fhe Deserf Training Cenfer Area. ln February I943, Major General Lunsford E. Olivei' assumed command. He was fo remain wifh fhe Division fhrough fhe remaining years of fhe warg 'ro frain, lead, and figh+ wifh fhe Division. In March I943 fhe 5fh Armored parficipafed in fhe Second Army maneu- vers in Tennessee. ln July I943 if fransferred fo Pine Camp, New York, preparafory fo embarking for overseas. Embarking for fhe European Theafer of Operafions in February I944, fhe division 'frained af Camp Chiseldon, Ogbourne, Sf. George and Tidworfh-Perham Downes in Wilfshire, England. As fhe U.S. Firsf Army embarked for fhe invasion of France, fhe 5fh Armored operafed hundreds of camps, servicing fhe invasion unifs. Augusf .I944 found fhe Vicfory Division in 'rhe fhick of fhe Normandy campaign and rapidly moving up on Lelvlans. As parf of General Paffon's Third Army, fhe division jumped-off on a 300-mile exploifafion behind fhe lines of fhe German Sevenfh Army. Affer fhe fall of LeMans, fhe 5fh pursued fhe enemy fo 'I'he Seine, wrecking fheir armor and inflicfing high casualfies. The division embarked for home on 2 Ocfober l945 and was inacfivafed on II Ocfober I945 af Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. ln addifion fo fhe division commendafion received from fhe XV Corps, Troop A, 85fh Reconnaisance Baffalion lfhen 85fh Cavalry Rcn Squadronl was awarded a Presidenfial Unif Cifafion for oufsfanding performance of dufy in acfion from I5 fo 20 December I944g Companies B and C, 47+h Armored lnfanfry Baffalion, received a Presidenfial Unif Cifafion for oufsfanding performance of dufy in acfion on 4-5 Sepfember I944.
