LILE LIEUTENANT coLoNEL COMMANDING, 374th FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION l Lieutenant Colonel Claude Mancil Liles was born in Carbon, Texas, on August 27, 1900, and enlisted in the United States Army on May 23, 1917. He was first assigned to Troop F, lst Texas Cavalry, and later trans- ferred to the 132nd Field Artillery of the 36th Division. At the height of World War I he sailed for France and landed in Brest on August 4, 1918, and returned to the United States in March, 1919. Mustered out of the service in April, 1919, he immediately started upon a successful career in the oil in- dustry. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in the Reserve Corps on October 28, 1929, with the 344th Field Artillery Regiment of the 90th Division. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in December, 1930, and to Captain in December, 1934. On November 4, 1940, he was called to active duty. He helped activate the 53rd Training Battalion and was promoted to Major in May, 1941. After corn- manding the 51st Field Artillery Battalion, he attended the Division Artillery Course at Fort Sill and was pro- l l A 8 1942.
