33rd FIELD ARTILLERY BATTAL10 ALTER H. De LA GE LIEUTENANT COLONEL COMMANDING, 373rd FIELD ARTILLERY Lieutenant Colonel Walter Howard De Lange was born in Denison, Texas, on December 29, 1900, and attended Austin College, Sherman College and Texas A. St M., being graduated from the latter in January, 1923. On January 5, 1923, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Corps and served at Brooks Field and Kelly Field, Texas, until 1924. On June 5, 1924, he was transferred to the Field Artillery and assigned to the 12th Field Artillery. On November 1, 1927, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He attended the Battery Officers' Course in 1928 and was later transferred to the 13th Field Artillery in Hawaii. ln 1932 he was assigned to the 4th Field Artillery, and on August 1, 1935, was promoted to Captain. The following two years were spent as Professor of Military Science and Tactics of the Tampa Public High Schools, Tampa, Florida, and in 1937 he was assigned to the 15th Field Artillery. He was promoted to Major on July 1, 1940, and was transferred to the 31st Field Artillery Regiment of the 7th Division, in May of 1941 he activated and assumed command of the 49th Field Artillery, also of the 7th Division. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on February 1,.1942, and while attending the Division Artillery Course at the Field Artillery School he was assigned to command the 373rd Field Artillery Battalion. On November 15, 1942, he assumed command.
