II F11 COLONEL COMMANDING, 398th INFANTRY REGIMENT Colonel Robinson Earl Duff was born in EI Paso, Illinois, on January 18, 1895, and attended Purdue University until 1917, when he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry. His first assignment was with the 46th Infantry of the 9th Division, serving there until its inactivation in 1921. During this time he was promoted to First Lieutenant in February, 1918, and to Captain in September, 1918. He was then assigned to the University of Oklahoma as Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics. In 1923 he was sent to Hawaii with the 35th Division. Later he was assigned to the Infantry School, and in 1931 he was selected to attend a two-year course at the Command and General Staff School. After a tour of duty with the Arizona National Guard, he attended the Army War College in 1935, Upon graduation he was promoted to Major and sent to the 13th Infantry. ln July, 1938, he was assigned to the G-4 Division of the War Department General Staff, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in September, 1940, and to Colonel in December, 1941-. He was later detailed as Chief of the General Depot Service in the Army Supply Forces, and in July, 1942, became Chief of Storage and Shipping. On September, 1942, he was ordered to the 100th Division as commanding officer of the 398th Infantry.
