WHAT IS INITIAL ENTRY TRAINING? The lnitial Entry Training program is designed to produce new soldiers who are motivated, disciplined, physically conditioned, trained in the common sol- dierly skills and capable of taking their place in the ranks ofthe Army in the field after Military Occupation- al Specialty CMOSD qualifications. Therefore all sol- diers who complete lnitial Entry Training have: a. Demonstrated the strength, stamina, and abili- ty to perform the task prescribed and under- stand the higher standards of physical condi- tioning which are required for completion of initial entry training. b. Demonstrated the desire and have accepted the need to apply themselves to accomplishing assigned tasks. c. Understand and adhere to their enlistment ob- ligation, including the Oath of Enlistment, and their role as soldiers. d. Swom their devotion to the Army in its defense of the United States and principles embodied in the Constitution. e. Understand and will abide by the Uniform Code ofMilitary Justice and other statutes and appli- cable rules and regulations. f. Been trained in the common soldierly skills which apply to all soldiers regardless of MOS or duty position. WHAT ARE DRILL SERGEANTS? They are the cautioning voice, the helpful hand, the watchful eye that guides the new soldier through the strenuous Army Training. They have gained their knowledge through practical experience. lt is properly their job to guide, instruct, and encourage the young people who are training to become soldiers. They are seasoned graduates of the Drill Ser- geants School - a course which reviews all the basics of lnitial Entry Training in a curriculum much more strenuous than l.E.T. They wear the Distinctive Mark of a Graduate of that School - the World War I type campaign hat or the Austra- lian Bush hat. To the Drill Sergeants at Fort Knox and the proud soldiers they have produced, this book is dedicated. INITIAL ENTRY TRAINING BEGINS lnitial Entry Training begins with the cracking of a Drill Sergeant's voice Fall ln , as you disembark the troop transports which have brought you to a new home. A quick formation and you answer to your name l'l'lere Sergeant to let yourselfknow it is really you who is there. An unfamiliar face approaches while you stand in formation. lie does not smile, but he has an air ofau- thority, confidence, and professionalism in his walk and stride. He stops in front of you and gazes over the entire platoon formation. His eyes show not a trace of emotion, and as they pierce you, inside you realize he is your Drill Sergeant. That first piercing sensation you will always remember for the rest of your life. After a short introduction of l'l am your Drill Ser- geant, and I will teach you to become a soldier, you begin leaming and learning fast. Within the first week you will have received classes on Drill and Ceremo- nies, Basic Rifle Marksmanship, Nuclear-Biological and Chemical Warfare, Communication Procedures and Equipment, First Aid, and of course Physical Training.
