SECRETARY OF THE ARMY WASHINGTON TO THE CLASS OF 1971: Your choice in dedicating THE BELL Yearbook of 1971 to the American Soldier in Combat is exemplary. For almost two centuries the United States Army has served our Country with supreme dedication. The men and women of the United States Army have provided great strength to our Nation and their accomplishments have insured the security of the United States and our Allies. As you graduate from this institution you will be entering into positions of increased responsibility and in the years ahead will have unusual opportunities to make significant contributions to society. Military service is public service and it offers the opportunity to devote the best years of your life to issues of major importance and to play a part in maintaining peace in the world. I challenge you to try to leave the Army or some part of it a better institution than you found it. If you do this, your efforts will bear fruit even after you have departed, and the chances are that in giving the best you have for your Country you will also gain much for yourself. Stanley R. Resor Stanley R. Resor UNITED STATES ARMY THE CHIEF OF STAFF To the Class of 1971: Your dedication of The Bell this year to the American soldier in combat is most appropriate. The ideals of service he has exhib- ited are a proud new chapter of the Anny tradition. Nowhere has his challenge been greater than in Vietnam where the Army has 'fought a difficult, complex war under adverse conditions both on the battlefield and at home. The Army of the Seventies faces multiple tasks which will demand the best from all of us. The need for enlightened and imaginative leadership has never been more critical. To sustain the Nation's commitments with a smaller Army will require the utmost in profes- sionalism, dedication, and resourcefulness from all officers. Selection to attend the Command and General Staff College is fit- ting recognition of your past accomplishments and future potential. The professional knowledge you have acquired and the enduring as- sociations you have made at Fort Leavenworth will serve you and the Army well in meeting the Challenges ahead. I wish you and your fellow officers from other nations around the world success in all your future endeavors. w. '63. WESTMORELAND General, United States Army Chief of Staff
