Vlll TO MY CLASSMATES, CLASS OF 1970-71, UNITED STATES ARMY COMMAND AND GENERAL STAFF COLLEGE: The Bell Yearbook staff is to be highly commended for their choice of The American Soldier in Combat as the theme for this year's annual. In truth, it is a most fitting dedication. The very essence of the Command and General Staff College lies in the understanding commitment of our most valuable resource, the American soldier, to combat. It is also proper that the theme recognizes the members of this class and the other classes which have graduated from the College as Well as the ultimate, lasting and invaluable contributions of those of our comrades who will never join us as graduates of GaGSC. But for them, some, and possibly none, of us would be here today. Of those of us receiving our diplomas this year, very few saw combat in World War II. Many saw the Korean conflict from the enlisted and company officer ranks and most of us have seen the fighting in Vietnam. We can be proud of our accomplishments as soldiers during and between these wars. Not only have we lived through two wars that were different from anything previously experienced by the military, but also we have lived through and are living in one of the most remarkable periods in the history of man. These experiences will be of the utmost value to the security of our country in the future. Whether in military or civil- ian life, in an all-volunteer or conscripted military force, or in any of the myriad possibilities posed by the years to come, the always new, ever-changing, and ever-increasing responsibilities of the Officer Corps will surely demand that we, unlike so many who have gone before us, remember the important lessons taught by our experience and not repeat the mistakes of the past. If we can accomplish this one goal, just possibly, The American Soldier in Combat will become a proud and glorious memoryo To each of you my sincerest congratulations and best wishes for the futureo It has been my great pleasure and distinct privilege to spend this last year with you. It will be an honor to serve with you again. LEEROY G.5 ONESd LTC, Medical Corps Class President
