lConHnued hom page161J 0 E Q Q. How long does it take an instructor to prepare an ,og mp hour of instruction? Realizing that this question called 2 for estimates, we asked it anyhow. We got estimates. 8 One man said sixty-five hours. Another said two. The rest of the answers were in between, coming out to an g i average of about seventeen hours of preparation for STUDENT'5 one hour on the podium. According to the informa- ylgw 0,-A tion received, the average instructor teaches a little Tvplcnf' INSTRUCTOR over seven hours a week. Do the instructors like you? Here is a question which has undoubtedly burned in the breast of every inhabitant of the echoing corners of Gruber. Did he really sneer at me, or is that his way of smiling? We asked the instructors to describe the type of student they most prefer and the type they most dislike, and now we are able to provide you with a checklist to determine your Student Appeal. Too late to use it here, of course, but it may come in handy at the lheaven forbidi War College. Certain characteristics stand out clearly. If you are eager to learn, twenty percent of the instructors think you are peachy. Being intelligent and something called an active participant rates you tops with fifteen percent, but you're on dangerous ground here, because if your active participation involves attempts to impress the instructor with your ill-gotten knowledge you are abhorred by thirteen percent. ikule l: Be intelligent, but don't let it show.l In this connection, knowing the school solution is considered very bad form, and letting the instructor or other students know you know it is grounds for losing your amateur standing. lFainting upon presentation of the school solution by the in- structor is definitely frowned upon.l Problem-hghting may or may not be considered active participation, but, anyhow, six percent of the instructors say don't do it and twenty-five percent say go ahead and get it out of your system. lRule two: The odds are about four to one in favor of problem fighting, if you don't count your fellow-students.l So you decide to participate. How? Simple, we have selected the most commonly used adiectives to provide a guide. Be constructive, interested, energetic, cheerful, bright, happy, trustworthy, loyal, courteous and kind, but, for heaven's sake, don't be talkative, vociferous, verbose, argumentative, loud, stubborn or incoherent. Be eager to learn, but never, never ask for the exact words to use on an examination. Admit you don't know it all, but don't be eager and stupid. You must not hog the discussion yet you should comment on other student's answers iwithout impressing them or the instructorl and you must never be an obvious bluff who lacks something called depth in his answers. lRule three: Watch what you say when you recite. The instructor may be listening.l If you were unaware of these aspects of the much-maligned instructors during the year at least now you may look back in retrospect and with the added light furnished by these short paragraphs review your relationships with the men with the pointers. Who is to say who was at fault? Just remember one thing. It may happen to you! The End
