f r , i i ifeilf Q -. .'... ' 9 Did you ever wonder iust how the famous CSQGSC troop units originated? Well, we did. Acting on a lead supplied by the college, we contacted Colonel W. R. Shanahan now stationed in Japan with Central Command. l-le advised us that the units were chosen because their designations had not been previously used. For example, the 20th Infantry Division represented an unused Regular Army division number, the 55th Division represented an unused National Guard division number, and the 72nd represented an unused Reserve division number. Colonel Shanahan further advised us that Colonel Henry E. Kelley, now retired, was instrumental in setting up the CKGSC units. The Military Review supplied Colonel Kelley's present address, a CONARC Research Unit, Fort Benning, Ga. When contacted, Colonel Kelley stated that the units were set up in 1950, when Colonel inow Generali R. N. Young was reorganizing the college curriculum. Lieutenant General lyianton S. Eddy was Commandant of the College at the time. Further excerpts from Colonel Kelley's letter follow: There were two reasons for creating the Corps. It was realized that much student time is unprohtably spent in 'reading into the problem.' To the extent that such time is expended on details that one would be living with daily in an actual campaign, this is unrealistic, lt was decided therefore to group the map exercises in progressive series. Each series was to include as many exercises as feasible. It was hoped this would reduce 'reading in' time. Part of this plan naturally involved continuing use of the same unit designations. The reason for selection of the speciic numbers used was to avoid use of any numerical designation possessing a large number of loyal 'alumni' among the students. Each new author tended to designate his old division in drawing up a new problem. Loyal adherents among the students were aggrieved when their old unit was not ade- quately represented in the school problems. When the map exercise was 'fought' on World War ll battletields, the situation was aggravated, particularly where the 'school solution' differed from history. The numerical designations were selected, therefore, on the sole basis of their pos- sessing no battle record Lthat we knew oft. l am not certain whether the series concept of map exercises has endured, but apparently the good old '2Oth' and its faithful companions have fought over the last six or seven years. By now, these units must rate more battle streamers than any other military unit since the dawn of military history. So that's how it all started. 129 1 ' .f ,ziw - Io .. . ll D 4 T O 'Q an I, .ul l- 'E'
