Lamballe, 20 December i956 The Mayor of Lamballe to: Captain Andre H, Gille MOM S. 7th Street Mayor of Lamballe and friend Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, U.S.A Captain, In the name of the population of Lamballe I wish to express to you our disappointment in having waited for you for more than three months. Each morning at dawn we think it shall be today, but each evening, alas, we find it was only one more false hope. When will you finally get to our town? What has the 20th U. S. Infantry Division taken for its emblem-the tortoise or the snail? With- out a doubt, we, the veterans of l9l4, can take pride in thinking that our town may be compared to the proud citadel of Verdun which, at that time, victoriously challenged the assaults of the enemy, but this feeling does not offset our impatience. I beg you to come quickly, there is no enemy in the town, we have seen only about five or six in the last few days, and they came only for a visit. Our enthusiastic reception has been prepared for you for a long time. The fiags and garlands of flowers placed in the streets by the inhabitants have already deteriorated several times because of the bad autumn weather, and their replacement is expensive for us. The slaughter house of Lamballe, which is nearly a rival of those of Chicago with its three hundred hogs slaughtered daily, has reserved kilometers of sausages for you, which will be offered to you according to a local custom, with great piles of buck- wheat cakes. Our firemen are prepared to meet you with their tank truck filled with four thousand liters of our best wine, all of which is liable to go bad on us. Our young men, who are preparing to join the colors, elected their Madelon and her two maids of honor. These three charming girls have caused the fiowers to wither several times with their bitter and salty tears. Now they content themselves with sad sighs which are so strong they could have turned the two windmills which dominated our town at one time. Well then, dear friends, keep trying, come quickly, We are waiting for you, and shall prove that French hospitality is not an empty word. J. Gombault Mayor Madelon of Lamballe llfi
