- ,, . Wise in policy, Valiant in action, Decisive in leadership The man from Independence Harry S. Truman was born in Lamar, Mo., May 8, 1884, the son of John Anderson Truman and Martha Ellen Young. As a child, Truman lived all around Missouri, his fatheris job as a livestock trader keeping them on the move. In 1890, his mother decided that shewanted her children to get a formal education, so the Trumans moved to Independence. Shortly after graduating from I Independence High School in 1901, fortunes turned for the Truman family. John Trumanis livestock trading business Went I .,..'r f under, and he lost ever'ything. This forced young Harry to put off plans of attending college. He worked a variety of jobs, mostly in banking as a clerk. ln l906,lhe and his brother moved to the 600-acre family farm near Grandview, Mo. to help his family manage and operate it. Over the years, he tried several failed business ventures, including an oil drilling operation in which he and his partners narrowly missed one of the biggest pools of oil in Oklahoma. Each time, Truman found himself returning to farming, and, as he enteredlhis 30s, hefelt his options in life were quickly drying up. I r The Boys of Battery D When the United States entered '4The Great War in 1917, Truman entered the Army and was' quickly promoted to first lieutenant. He was assigned to -the 129th Field Artillery Regiment ofthe 35th Division. , . . fe I.. Promoted to Captain, Truman found himself in France and in charge of Battery D. The nearly ,200-man unit had been a nightmare for the Army, . having already scared off three commanders, the last of which put in for a transfer after- just 90 days. When '4Captain Harry came to the battery, he was determined to restore discipline and respect for authority. His courage and . determination paid off, as he led his men through some of the worst fighting ofthe war without losing a single man. When he departed the battery, the soldiers honored him with a silver cup inscribed with the words: I 1 '6Captain Harry S. Truman. After the War 2 Truman was discharged from the Army in May 1919, and a month later wed Bess Wallace at Trinity Episcopal Church. in Independence and settled into the Wallace home at 219 North Delaware. 'Partnering with an old Army buddy, Truman opened a menis furnishing store, or haberdashery, in downtown Kansas City. .' y I At first, business was booming. I 'Then in 1922, a postwar recession put Truman out of business practically overnight. H, j He. lost his bid for re-election to the county court during the 1924 elections. It would be the only election he ever lost. Afterleaving office, he Worked as a membership salesman for the Kansas City Automobile Club. In ' 1926, he was back in politics when he was elected presiding judge i of the Jackson County Court, an office he held until 1934. He won approval for bond issues creating a county hospital, new jail, A , courthouse and a system of paved highwaysj . . - .4 . 1 , . up his mind to make a run for A the Senate. Registering as a' democrat, Truman campaigned through the summer to win the nomination. In November, he was elected to the United States Senate by defeating incumbent Republican Roscoe C. Patterson by 262,000 votes. Truman kept a low profile during his first term, but after being re-elected in 1940, the senator found himself using his integrity and demand for justice to prevail at a time that tested his country's resolve. E Months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, Senator Truman proposed that the Senate create a special committee to investigate defense contracts. The Senate, Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, nicknamed . the Truman Committee, . was established by Truman and saved American taxpayers about S15 billion. A The senator from Missouri, who already had a reputation for playing fair in his home state, had now brought that reputation to bear on the A national stage. Truman was less eager to put himself a mere step away from the presidency. Truman had . been summoned to a hotel room one afternoon in a final attempt to change his mind. FDR called and asked the party chairman if he had 'fgot that fellow lined up yet? f'No,,' he said. 'tHe is the contrariest shffsbff mule from Missouri I ever dealt with. Well, you tell the senator that if he wants to break up the Democratic Party in the middle of a war, that's his rehsponsibilitylv Then FDR slammed down the phone. . On Nov 7, 1944, FDR was elected to an unprecedented fourth term as president, with Harry Truman his vice president. The Moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me. V. . Leading the nation out of the Great Depressionand, through most of World War Il had taken its toll on Roosevelt. On April l2,l945, while posing for a portrait during a spring vacation at Warm Springs, Ga., Roosevelt complained of a 'severe headache and then collapsed. He never regained consciousness., 1 if ' 2
