He entered the United States Navy May 25, 1978 and completed initial training at Re- cruit Training Center, Orlando, FL and radioman MA school at SSC,San Diego, Calif. Selected as a Chief Petty Officer in September 1987, Master Chief Held has served in numerous sea and shore commands during his career. His initial sea tour was on USS ENTER- PRISE I C VN 65j. Follow on sea tours include USS KITTYHAWK ICV 63j, USS MISSOURI IBB 63j and ,USS INGERSOLL IDD 990j. ' Master Chief Held served ashore at U. V S. Naval F acility Adak, Alaska, Naval Communica- tions Station Harold E. Holt, Exmouth, Western Australia, Naval Communications Area Master Station, Guam, Naval Recruiting District Ohio, and most recently assigned as Lead Instructor, Leadership Training Continuum, Great Lakes, IL. Master Chief Held was awarded the Navy! He enlisted in the Navy in 1971 receiv- ing his commission through the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program in Augustffl 976, upon graduation from the University of New ,Mexico with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. . Upon completing the Surface Warfare Officer Divi- sion Course in Newpo1t,.Rhode,Island, Captain Wamer's first tour was as Communications and Electronic Mate- rial Officer on USSSHASTA IAE 332. He went on to serve as Administration Officer 'and Navigator. V Captain Warner next taught navigation and opera- tions courses at Texas ASLM University and earned a Masters of Business Administration through the Ad- vanced Education Program. y p After completing Department Head School, Captain Warner served as Engineer Officer on USS PA UL IFF 10802. His next assignment was Operations Officer on USS RICHARD E. BYRD KDDG 232. Upon completion of his department head tours, Captain Warner served as Electronic Warfare Officer on Commander, Striking Fleet Atlantic!.Commander, Second Fleet Staff. In April 1989, Captain Warner reported as Command- ing Officer, USS HERCULES KPHM 22. While in com- mand, USS HERCULES earned the CNO Safety Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award and U.S. Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon. From August 1991 to June 1992, Captain Warner at- tended the Naval War College where he earned a Mas- ters of Arts in National Strategy and Strategic Studies. Captain Warner next served as C41 Policy Branch Chief at U.S. Strategic Command and was designated a Joint Specialty Officer upon completion of his tour in 1994. . , . W - , . lr ,. During his command, PLAT T E completed over seventy-ive replen- ishments at sea while supporting U.S. and foreign navies in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea during operations Assured Response and Diligent Force. For the next three years, Captain Warner was assigned as Surface Operations, Assistant Operations and Opera- tions Officer on Battle Force Seventh Fleet!Commander Carrier Group Five staff stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. While assigned to the staff, he completed two emergent Arabian Gulf deployments aboard USS INDEPEN- DENCE KCV 622 and USS KITTYHAWK KCV 632 in support of Operation Southern Watch, earning two Navy Unit Commendation awards. Priorto reporting to Commander, Carrier Group Two as Chief of Staff, Captain Warner commanded USS SUP- PLY IAOE 62. During this command, SUPPLY complet- ed over 160 replenishments at sea while supporting U.S. and foreign navies in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterrenean Sea and Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. While in command, SUPPLY was awarded the CNO Surface Ship and Helicopter Safety Awards and was an honorable mention for the Edward F. Ney Food Service award. Captain Warner's military awards include the Legion of Merit with gold star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Com- mendation, Navy Commendation and Navy!Marine Corps Achievement Medals. He also has been awarded the Distinguished Volunteer Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
