HS T 's inaugural Planned Incremental Availability USS HARRY S. T R UMAN entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Sept. 5, 2001, just days before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon that would devastate the country and send us into a War on terrorism. HST Sailors donned hard hats and headed to the yards to begin the inaugural Planned Incremental Availability CPIAD that would make sure HST was ready to light in that War. HST saw numerous upgrades and improvements to many systems throughout the ship during the industrial period., Qneoffthe V g gpyt A by 25 foot hole was cut from the second deck down to the seventh to accommodate the machinery. The ship's incinerator was replaced With a new, state-of-the-art model, and various habitability improvements Were made to spaces all over the ship. Sailors saw their normal routines disrupted and the hangar bay was transformed into an industrial park. But ultimately, HST completed the most successful shipyard availability in Norfolk Naval Shipyard history. After Wrapping up the largest initial availability ever for an aircraft carrier, the ship left the yards Feb. 22, 2002 ahead of schedule and under budget. overhaulsiwasthe installation of a ninth if . f- . t X., -., ,. . 1 V air conditioning unit.
