'1 Master Chief Markum was born and raised in Nor- folk, New York. He attended high school at Noorwood Norfolk Central and graduated in 1979. In March of the same year, he joined the Army Reserves and attended boot camp and advanced training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. In February 1981, Master Chief Markum enlisted in the Navy, attending recruit training at RTC Orlando, Florida. He then received orders to attend HT HA school, phase one, at Treasure Island, California followed by phase two and class Cn weld school in San Diego, California. After completion of school he reported to USS HOLLAND IAS 321 forward deployed at Holy Loch, Scotland. He then cross-decked to USS H UNLE Y IAS 31 j where he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin. In June of 1983, Master Chief Markum transferred to USS YELLO WST ONE KAD lj and was promoted to Second Class Petty Ofhcer. The USS YELLO WST ONE was the first tender to deploy with a mixed gender crew. Master Chief Markum reported to Naval Submarine Support Facility, New London, Connecticut in December 1986 where he was assigned duties as the Leading Chief Petty Officer for the ship's filter shop. It was there that he was selected to Chief in September 1989. In December 1989, he reported to USS EMORY S. LAND IAS-39j homeported in Norfolk, Virginia as the Leading Chief Petty Officer of hull repair division, run- ning the production effort for the submarines assigned to Submarine Squadron Eight. S e ms BUCK sToPS 'levy' Master Chief Markum reported to St. Julians Creek in Portsmouth, Virginia, in December 1993 and was pro- moted to Senior Chief in April 1994. His duties included Ship Supervisor for USS AMERICA I C V 66j overhauls, Hull Repair division officer and Repair Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. During this tour, the St. Julians Creek facility transferred from COMNAVAIR- LANT to COMNAVSURFLANT, with the continued integration of military in the shipyard along with region- alized maintenance and standing down this command to fall under the cognizance of SIMA, Norfolk. In April 1998, he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer. Eligible for transfer, he applied to and was accepted for the Command Master Chief Program. After attending the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island, he reported to Strike Fighter Squadron 105 at NAS Cecil Field, Florida. They deployed on USS ENTER- PRISE I C VN 651 where he earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist pin. Upon retum from deployment the Strike Fighter Wing transferred to NAS Oceana, Virginia. Master Chief Markum was then assigned the duties of Command Master Chief for Carrier Air Wing THREE. He assumed the duties of Command Master Chief of USS HARRYS. TRUMAN ICVN 751 May 31, 2002. His personal awards include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal fthird awardj, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal Qiifth awardj and several unit and campaign awards.
