4 i|f ihe .flSTMedical Department is a diversified group of medical professionals with the common goal of maintaining the overall health of the crew at its highest possible level. Utilizing the latest in technology and traditional fornis of medical practice, the medical department is a floating 60-bed hospital. iSHTMedical can care for everything from the common cold to complex emergency surgical procedures. They can even take their medical capabilities to other ships in need, with the emergency fly- away team. They have also rendered care to foreign civilians, regardless of their nationality. The iSBTmedical team consists of 13 officers and 40 hospital corpsmen. Medical is staffed with a senior medical officer, sur- geon, general medical officer, psychologist, physical therapist, nurse anesthetist, flight surgeons, physician assistant, general duty corpsmen. laboratory technicians, pharmacy technicians, x-ray ' lift technician, operating room technicians, optometry technician, ' physical therapy technician, psychology technician, aviation medicine technicians, preventive medicine technicians, independent duty corpsmen, and substance abuse counselors. Ensuring the health and well-being of 5,000 Sailors and Marines can be a daunt- ing task HSTs medical department is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to serve that purpose. Treating more than 1,700 Sailors and Marines each month, the medical department contributes to operational readiness by maintaining the health of the crew. From major emergencies to routine immunizations, this combined stalt of physicians, nurses and corpsmen maintains a fully-operational hospital onboard HST.
