I , I I ll A native of Birming- ham, Alabama, Colonel Schmidt was commis sioned a Second Lieu- tenant in the U.S. Ma- rine Corps upon his graduation from Ala bama College with a B.A. degree in Iune 1969. His professional mil itary education in- cludes: The Basic School, Amphibious Warfare School and the Command and Staff College, all at Quantico, VA. Colonel Schmidt is also a graduate of the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama and earned a M.A. de- gree Uournalismj from the University of Wis- consin, Madison, WI. An Infantry Officer, ation Desert Shield f Desert Storm. Colonel Schmidt's personal decorations and medals include: The Bronze Star, De- fense Meritorious Ser- vice Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Ioint Service Commendation Medal Navy Commen- dation Medal With Combat 'V , two Navy Achievement Medals, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Colonel Schmidt is married to the former Vicki Vendegrift of Bir- mingham, Alabama. They reside in Base Quarters, Camp Lejeune, North Caroli- na with sons Chris, Tim and Steve. Colonel Iohn W. Schmidt Colonel Schmidt has led infantry and logis- tics units. He served as Platoon and Company Commander with 1st Battalion, 1st Marines in Vietnam and 3rd Bat- talion, 1st Marines, and Commanding Officer of MEU Service Support Group-22 for two Landing Force Sixth Fleet deployments. I S I Q l i l E 5 1 1 1: 1 11 E 3. 'Q 1 1 was born on November 7th 1942 in Baltimore, Mary land but now calls Arcadia California home. He re ceived his commission in the United States Navy upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in Iune 1965. Captain Newlon first served as the Anti Submarine Warfare Officer and Navigator aboard USS EVERSOLE IDD 7891. He then attended Naval De stroyer School, and upon completion served as the Weapons Officer and Chief Engineer in USS FORREST ROYAL IDD 8721. In 1969, Captain Newlon was as- signed to the Naval Advi- sory Group, Naval Forces Vietnam as the Senior Ad- visor to Vietnamese Navy River Assault Groups TWENTY-THREE and THIRTY-ONE. After graduation from Na- val Postgraduate School in Chief of Staff CCG 8 I Rhode Island He was then assigned as Special Assis- tant for Financial Manage- ment to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations Navy Program Planning IOP-081 fI'OI1'1 1986 to 1989 Captain Newlon com- manded USS WAIN- WRIGHT ICG 281 home- ported 1n Charleston South Carolina from April 1989 to April 1991 during which time the ship deployed to the Mediterranean w1th the Forrestal Battle Group and underwent a new threat up- grade overhaul. Captain Newlon's awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, Mer- itorious Service Medal with three Gold Stars, Navy Com- mendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing De- vice, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Rib- bon, Navy Expeditionary Medal and Humanitarian Captain Arthur W. Newlon, Ir. 1973 with a Master of Sci- ence degree in Operations Research, Captain Newlon served as Executive Officer in USS BREWTON IFF 10861. FTOII1 1975-1979 he served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations assigned to the Systems Analysis IOP-961 and Man- agement Control and Anal- ysis IOP-101 Divisions. His next assignment was Ex- ecutive Officer in USS WORDEN ICG 181. When relieved in February 1981, he was assigned to the staff of the Com- mander in Chief, U.S. Pa- cific Fleet as the Fleet Re- quirements and Strategic Concepts Officer in the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT Plans and Policy Division. Captain Newlon assumed command of USS BENJA- MIN STODDERT IDDG 221 homeported in Pearl Har- bor, Hawaii in May 1983. Upon relief in Iuly 1985, he attended the College of Na- val Warfare at the Naval War College in Newport, Service Medal. Captain Newlon is mar- ried to the former Diane Lee Lucia of Milwaukee, Wis- consin. They have two chil- dreng Michael, attending the University of Maryland, and Bill, a graduate of Gettys- burg College in Pensylvania.
