Johnson June 1993 to Present Captain Carlos John- son, a native of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, graduated from the Col- lege of William and Mary in 1968. After completion of Aviation Officer Can- didate School and flight training, he was designat- ed a naval aviator and winged by his father, a World War II Hellcat driver, in June of 1970. Following A-7 training in Lemoore, California, he was assigned his first fleet duty with the VA-37 Bulls embarked on USS Saratoga. During subse- quent sea duty assign- ments, Captain Johnson made eight Mediterra- nean deployments, an In- dian Ocean deployment and an eleven month combat deployment to Southeast Asia where he flew over 120 missions over North Vietnam. He has served fleet squadron tours with VA-37, VA-81 and as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VAXVFA-86. Captain Johnson served onboard USS Saratoga as the As- sistant Strike Operations Officer where he earned his designation as a Fleet Officer of the Deck. Following his com- mand tour he reported for duty as the Deputy Air Wing Commander for Commander, Carrier Air Wing THREE embarked on USS John F. Kennedy. Captain Johnson has ac- cumulated over 4000 flight hours and achieved over 1200 arrested land- USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT ings on 11 different car- riers. During shore assign- ments, Captain Johnson has been assigned staff positions with Command- er, Naval Air Forces At- lantic IACOS Readi- nessfN3J, Navy Operational Intelligence Center fDirector of SPEAR providing direct support to joint forces in Operation Desert ShieldfDesert Stormj, Commander, Light At- tack Wing ONE ICSOJ, CVWR-20 LOPSXLSOJ, and VA-174 IWEPSXDACM instructor and LSOJ. He is a grad- uate of the Armed Forces Staff College. In addition to campaign and unit awards, Captain Johnson has been award- ed the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross I2 awardsj, the Meritorious Service Med- al I2 awardsJ, the Air Medal I2 individualf1Z strike flight awardsJ and the Navy Commendation Medal with combat V I3 awardsj. Captain Johnson, his wife Jackie, son Jeremy and daughter Morgan re- side in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Jackie is the daughter of Commander and Mrs. H. H. lJackJ Chandler, USN fretJ of New Braunfels, Texas. Commander Chandler, a Mustang 30 year Navy veteran, is a Pearl Harbor survivor. 1

His professional mil itary education in- cludes: The Basic School, Amphibious Warfare School and the Command and Staff College, all at Quantico, VA. Colonel Schmidt is also a graduate of the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama and earned a M.A. de- gree Uournalismj from the University of Wis- consin, Madison, WI. Colonel Schmidt is married to the former Vicki Vendegrift of Bir- mingham, Alabama. They reside in Base Quarters, Camp Lejeune, North Caroli- na with sons Chris, Tim and Steve. Colonel Iohn W. He served as Platoon and Company Commander with 1st Battalion, 1st Marines in Vietnam and 3rd Bat- talion, 1st Marines, and Commanding Officer of MEU Service Support Group-22 for two Landing Force Sixth Fleet deployments.
