Commander, Carrier Battle Group EIGHT Rear dmlral Ia L Iohnson A native of West Salem Wisconsin Rear Admiral Iohnson was commissioned on 5 Iune 1968 followin graduation from the Unite States Naval Academy He entered flight training at Pensacola Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator 1n October 1969 Following fleet replace ment training 1n the F81 Crusader at VF-124 NAS Miramar Rear Admiral Iohnson reported to VF-191 where he made two combat cruises on board USS ORIS KANY CVA 341 . In Iu y 1973 he reported to the Bureau of Naval Per- sonnel where he served as an AVIHIIOH 1un1or Officer Detailer unt1l December 1975 This was followed by enrollment at the Armed Forces Staff College where he graduated 1n1une 1976 Returning to VF-124 Rear Admiral 1ohnson under- went training in the F -14A Tomcat. His subsequent as- signment to VF-142 in May 1977 included Mediterra- nean deployments aboard USS AMERICA ICV 661 and USS DWIGHT D. EISEN- A1r Wing ONE this time as a Senior Carrier Air Wing Commander During this tour Carrier Air Wing ONE embarked in USS AMERI- CA KCV 661 for Norwegian Sea operations and a Med- iterraneanflndian Ocean deployment He was re- lieved in Iuly 1989 and sub- sequently reported to the Naval War College as a member of the CNO s Stra- tegic Studies Grou Rear Admiral 10 nson re- ported for duty 1n1une 1990 as the Dlrector Distribution Department Naval M1l1tary Personnel Command and served as Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for Distri- bution 1n the Bureau of Na- val Personnel In October 1992 Rear Ad- miral Iohnson re orted for duty as Comman er Carrier Group EIGHT Rear Admiral Iohnsons decorations include the Le- gion of Merit IZ1, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 181, Navy Com- mendation Medal and other service X campai n awards. From Iuly 1980 to Ian- uary 1983, he served as Ex- ecutive Officer and Com- manding Officer of VF-84, embarked in USS NIMITZ ICVN 681. Rear Admiral Iohnson next reported to the Naval Military Personnel Com- mand where he served as Head, Aviation Iunior Offi- cer Assignment Branch un- til September 1984. In March 1985, he assumed command of Carrier Air Wing ONE. During this tour, Air Wing ONE embarked in USS AMERICA ICV 661 for Norwegian Sea and Medi- USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT terranean operations. U or relinquishing commandp in Iuly 1986, Rear Admiral Iohnson reported to Com- mander Sixth Fleet where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations until Iune 1987. In February 1988, Rear Admiral Iohnson again as- sumed command of Carrier mer Garland Hawthorne of Colorado Springs, Colorado. They reside in Norfolk, Vir- ginia, with their daughter, Cullen, a graduate of Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia.

-at Commandln Officer Rear dmiral Charles S. Abbot la, Florida, Rear Admi- ral Charles S. Abbot graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1966 and reported to the guided missile destroyer USS HENRY B. WILSON IDDG 71 for duty as Mis- sile Officer. In October 1967, Admiral Abbot entered New College Oxford University, Eng- land, as a Rhodes Schol- ar. After completing his graduate degree he at- tended flight training, and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1972. Admiral Abbot then reported to VA-122 at Lemoore, California, for A-7E Corsair II Fleet Readiness Training and was assigned to Attack Squadron 27 on board USS ENTERPRISE ICVN 651. He completed U.S. ICVN 711 Precommis- sioning Unit as Execu- tive Officer. He served as the first Executive Officer of the ship fol- lowing commissioning in October 1986. After detaching from USS THEODORE ROO- SEVELT ICVN 711 in 1987, Admiral Abbot at- tended the Program for Senior Officials in Na- tional Security at Har- vard University dprior to reporting for uty as Commanding Officer, USS CALOOSAHAT- CHEE CAO 981. In Feb- ruary 1989 he was as- signed as Assistant Chief of Staff for Oper- ations for Commander SECOND FLEET, rior to being orderedp for duty as Commanding Officer, USS THEO- DORE ROOSEVELT QCVN 711. Iune 1990 to August 1992 A native of Pensaco- DORE ROOSEVELT l Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, in 1976, and was as- signed to the Strike Air- craft Test Directorate at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD. While at Patuxent River, Admiral Abbot participated as a test pi- lot in the T-34C, T-A7C and FXA-18 projects. He was the first attack pilot to fly the FXA-18 Hornet. In February 1980 he joined VA-46 on board USS 1OHN F. KENNE- DY ICV-671. Following this tour, Admiral Ab- USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT bot served in VA-86 as Executive Officer and then Commanding Of- ficer from 1une 1982 until Iune 1983. In Iuly 1983, he en- tered the Naval Nuclear Power School, and fol- lowing completion, re- ported to USS THEO- Admiral Abbot is married to the former Marjorie Sellars of Cleveland, Ohio. They have three sons, Spen- cer, Sebastian and Mat- thew, and reside in Grafton, Virginia.
